New BMW 135is Continues BMW’s “s” Model Tradition.

15.05.2012

New top performance model 1 Series for 2013

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 15, 2012 …. In the long standing tradition of high performance BMW “is” models, BMW today announced an enhanced performance version of the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible called the BMW 135is. The 2013 135is Coupe and Convertible focus the qualities that made the 135i such a success amongst driving enthusiasts – with more performance, enhanced sound and dynamic design details. Both the new 135is Coupe and Convertible are scheduled to arrive in BMW Center showrooms this fall with retail pricing set at $44,145 and $48,845 respectively (including $895 destination and handling).

Both models are equipped with BMW’s award winning TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine (N55) featuring Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, direct injection and a single twin-scroll turbocharger. For the 135is, the engine has been tuned to increase peak horsepower to 320 hp (+20 hp increase) and 317 lb-ft of torque (+17 lb.ft) while maintaining the same emissions level and MPG ratings of the 135i. A Performance exhaust system complements the increased engine performance and provides a sporty exhaust tone. The engine cooling system has been upgraded to match the additional performance output by adding a larger, and more powerful radiator fan and an auxiliary radiator.

Both BMW 135is models will be offered with either a standard 6-Speed manual transmission or an optional 7-Speed Double Clutch Transmission.

The 135is is equipped with sport suspension incorporating an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel.

BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control, but at a higher threshold before activation. This allows the driver to experience more spirited driving on dry roads and offers more flexibility when driving in more challenging conditions such as in snow. If the driver desires, both DSC and DTC can be disabled entirely. In addition to its duties as a safety system, the DSC system on the 135is is programmed specifically to enhance performance-oriented driving.

The differential in the 135is comes from a new generation of final drives optimized for running smoothness and fuel efficiency. Featuring double-helical ball bearings, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Electronic rear brake management is used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns and low-traction conditions.

The exterior of the new 135is Coupe / Convertible will be clearly identified by exclusive 18” wheels, unique high-gloss black kidney grill, black mirror caps and special exterior badges in additional to the standard M Sport Package components. Interior highlights include stainless steel pedals, special interior badges and optional black leather seats with blue stitching for the standard sport seats.

The BMW135is Coupe and Convertible are available to order now and are scheduled to arrive in BMW Center showrooms this fall.

So the send-off of the e82 is an N55 with PPK pre-installed that's being called an 135is?

Too bad it didn't get the M-badge treatment like the F20 ///M135i

I guess we all knew the 135is was coming. I am surprised it isn't getting the n54 like the 335is did.

Too little too late.
A 135 with a PPKII added and a couple of bits added to raise the price. Not a greater bump in hp over the readily available PPK. No LSD even. No thanks.

Spend all that money and still get beat by a regular 135i with a tune.

So now we have a 135i a 1M an M135i and a 135is?

What a bloody pointless lineup!

Pretty much what I thought it would be, 135i plus PPK (stage 2), performance exhaust and M-Sport. An upgraded differential was announced with the 2012 LCI, this might be pretty much the same thing. Oh yeah, you can get blue stitching on the black interior and the wheels are exclusive.

Actually it isn't the same tune as the M135 because the M135 get's 332lb-ft torque and this gets 317lb-ft torque, this proves the engine of the M135 has been tune a little bit further that the PPK 2, but im pretty sure that this car with DCT will be faster to 60mph than both the M135 and 1M Coupe. Just talking in acceleration figures because in a track things will continue to be different leaving the 1M Coupe the advantage (at least until we know some M135 track times, but the 1M Coupe should continue to run faster around a track)

As some have noted, this should have come out a long time ago. The upgraded cooling, wheels, and exhaust make this car a nice starting point for a build but the MSRP is near that of the 1M and it is a lot less of a car.

I believe that the N54 will not meet upcoming emissions regulations. This 135is model will be sold until next year at least, and perhaps even into 2014 depending on the release timing of the next generation F22 2 series.

I am a bit surprised to see this model given that the E82 is nearing its end of life. In fact its presence may indeed signal that the car will be on the market for more than just one more year as I suggest above.

I've always said that the 135i is BMW's best kept secret. It's nice to see BMW is rewarding the enthusiasts with a chance to buy an even sharper 135i.

This! I have no doubt the 135is will be one fun little car, but the chassis is so OLD. I know a lot of people hate the design of the F20, but the interior improvements a really nice. It will be a bit crazy to see the F82 hang out until 2014, but that seems even more likely with the intro if this IS model.

I love how they tout the stainless pedals but picture plastic ones.

Personally, I think BMW should keep the ///M logo specific to those that are 100% M-spec and add the "s" (e.g. 135is, 335is, etc.) to those cars that aren't exactly ///M cars but have a performance upgrade (factory) with some M stuff to it. If BMW is trying to whore-out the ///M to sell more cars, then we are no better than ricers with a fancy badge or oversized muffler attached.

Well, I agree with your point a little, but the more M performance stuff on the car you're approaching M products and I don't think BMW wants to do that.

That's not an M part... the 1M has basically the M3 setup where I think they could have easily put the PS with better shocks and springs and a subtle drop without encroaching even slightly. Plus, they don't make the 1M anymore so more sales more better.

So the N54 won't meet future emissions standards? I saw the headline and this car excited me. But I have two key questions: Whats the price? And where's the N54?
