Rear Winter tyres any good ?, help

my 135i is basically a sledge in snow

Its a case of parking it up and going for a bus or trying to find something to put on the car that will keep it going.

Anyone got any suggestions ?

I called quick fit and they told me Pirelli do a winter tyre for £260.00 each fitted.

I dont want to shell out and put them on if they dont make much difference.

Does anyone have any experience of these tyres or any other winter / snow tyre ?

Winter tyres make all the difference in the world. The summer RFT's are poor performers at temperatures below freezing and hopeless in even a few cm of snow.

Just rears? Don't you want the same level of grip at front and back? Would imagine some grip at the rear with no steering would not be fun

Garage List
I don't have winter tyres either. 400Nm of torque through the rear wheels on summer tyres doesn't work so well in snow...

In Nottingham we've got it away with it so far - but I was up Mansfield way yesterday (10 miles up the road) and basically got stuck twice in a car park full of snow - it was just embarrasing! I'm due two rear tyres fairly soon (after just 18 months) and am looking forward to having some grip again. Some in depth research to do first though ;-)

On a different note, does anyone else have problems when it's icy, with the windows not going up and down properly to allow the door to shut? Most annoying having to wait for the deicer to kick in before I can shut the door!

Have the same prob with the windows. Best leave the heater on full blast with door almost shut for 10 mins so the window can go up fully. Mines been off the road for a week as i couldn't move it due to the snow. Loved getting in it this evening and going for a blast....

Same here with the windows. PITA. Won't drop that little bit when you open the door, and then door won't shut. End up driving around with the window not seated properly. How do folks in properly cold countries put up with it?

Noticed a yellow warning comes up in the dash display now - didn't do that last winter. Software upgrade? Picture of a windows with a cross through it. Guess it's telling you not to use them.

Windscreen washer pump got blocked - had that sorted today.

Actual driving has been fine though. No drama, diesel chugs along in second all by itself.

I'm 5 miles south of Mansfield (Ravenshead) and my car has been completely rubbish in the snow. Not sure why but it's much worse than my wife's 335d Coupe which has wider 255 19 inch tyres!!

This morning was horrendous, black ice everywhere, but my car performed better than FWD cars in the ice and I was able to make up the local roads (hill sections) where the FWD cars were all stuck.

Back OT, you basically got to weigh up the options... is it cost efficient to swap tyres / wheels. I estimate £750 - £1000 for 4 x 16/17" tyres and 2nd hand wheels, and for how long? Usually we only get affected by the snow / ice for 1-2 weeks per year. Then you got to store the other wheels.

It may be an idea to just swap the rears, but I wouldn't be too keen on summer tyres on the fronts and winter on the rears. Most winter tyres are also limited to a maximum 80mph which may cause an issue on major motorways that are clear etc.
