Intro! ADL
Hi 1er' addicts.
After months and months of trolling forums and trying to figure out what I actually want... I've finally purchased a 135i. Glad to be apart of the scene. Many SA, Adelaide members about? Regards, Wayne. Last edited by Weezy; 02-12-2015 at 05:28 PM.. |

Hi Froop!
Me and my partner are just about to start building our first home so I dare say no modifications any time soon. The car is such a dream to drive compared to the S15 I had. I want to keep it that way to be honest. Only aesthetical modifications I would do are the following; Tint Updated angel eyes Corner covers for the headlights (I think it gives it a better shape) Last edited by Weezy; 02-12-2015 at 11:35 PM.. |

Congrats on the purchase Wayne.
I also moved from an S15 to a 135i. Quite a step up hey! You really should consider a tune (JB4, Cobb or Procede) at bare minimum. They're cheap and really boost the performance (175 to 225rwkw on average)

I can't help but continue to think 'Why on earth didn't I do this sooner' while driving it haha.
I know I only just mentioned no modifications, but I'm picking up a Cobb AP tonight. Cant wait to feel the car after simply unlocking a few more ponies |

Do yourself a favour, get some bolt ons and then get some E85 for the E30 Cobb race map . It is absolutely night and day between any of their other OTS flashes.

So I picked up my Cobb AP V3 tonight,
I uploaded stage 1 map, aggressive, 401, and as I eased on full throttle I got a warning code come up (engine light), instantly got off the throttle. Cylinder 3 misfiring. Attempted the same with stage 1 sport map, and same code came up. Baring in mind I didn't jab on the throttle it was ease on of full throttle in 3rd gear, as soon as I noticed a misfire I backed off. Cylinder 3 misfire again. Currently, my car has 69,000km and from what I can tell via the service books it has the same coil pack & spark plugs from factory. I assume I would best off replacing all 6 coil packs rather than just the one at fault? Would this be the reason for the code and has anyone experienced similar? I've since returned the tune back to factory tune, and will power through the rev range fine with nil engine faults, or misfiring occurring. |

Yes it sounds like coil packs or spark plugs are at fault. While they may show up fine at stock power, adding a tune will just magnify any age/weaknesses so it's best to replace both so you're starting fresh. The stage 1 tune should be nice and reliable from there. Good luck.

6 x coil packs 6 x spark plugs full service 'walnut' blast the valves (if someone here in ADL even does it) Still blown away by the performance of a stock N54 Last edited by Weezy; 02-19-2015 at 05:57 PM.. |

To be honest, it's not necessary to change both the spark plugs and the coils. If it's a misfire in only cylinder 3 I would do some detective work first to determine if it is the spark or the coil.
Just swap the coils in 3 and 4 and run it again. If the misfire stays in 3 then it's the spark plug and change all 6. If moves to cylinder 4 then it's the coil pack and you can just change it by itself. Stock spark plugs on a stock tune are supposed to last over 100,000kms and the coils themselves are supposed to last even longer than that. My guess is that you have a bad coil in 3. You can just swap everything if you want to, but it's really not necessary. On my E88 I've done 130,000kms and I'm still on the original coils and spark plugs LOL. Hasn't skipped a beat. It's got a JB4 running E35 and the only time it's ever misfired is when the HPFP went. On my E82 it's definitely more fussy. I changed the spark plugs to NGKs, not because of misfires but because I'm running more power. When I pulled the coil packs, cylinder 6 had degraded to the point the rubber boot around the tip fell to pieces and was stuck inside the spark plug hole. Had to fish it out with a custom hook tool (Thanks Pete). Cylinder 5 was on it's way as well so I just replaced both. Still haven't had any spark plug or coil related misfires either before or after I changed. After I upgraded my turbos, I started to get cylinder 5 and 6 misfires. I swapped both the plugs and the coils around but it stayed in 5 and 6 and was most likely due to DMFW harmonics causing misfires. But strangely, it went away on its own even though I started to make even more power.

I agree pin pointing the problem as per your suggestion with moving the coil packs around to see if the problem moves to another cylinder.
Initially my thought was, confirm the error (plugs/coil pack), replace the item (not them all), reflash the tune and happy days. Then I got to thinking,(as per BMR) $59 per coil pack, 6 x spark plugs $159, and having a service due within the next 1,000km it would be in my best interests to just replace the lot, and know that everything is in as new condition and freshly serviced before I start pulling more ponies out of it. The temptation is to replace what's not performing and get back to reflashing the tune, but then sensibility kicks in, and I feel like I should just wait and bide my time, do it all at the once, then retune. And further to all of that, the urgency to go faster isn't there because as I said, I'm still thoroughly enjoying the car as is. |

Thanks Anasasis.
Headed out for a spirited run through the Adelaide Hills Sunday morning. Again, the car obliterated any prior expectations I had. Utilizing the balance and low down torque, chasing corners has never been more enjoyable. A true driving experience. Two more snaps - |
