If this car ever makes production it will be a riot.
Here's an list compiled from an e90 poster, BK. With lower engine and better handling characteristic, the M1, if M1, will be the most coveted M car. Quote:

If they came out with an M1, I bet the base price would be close to 50k, way out of my league with some options right now. Plus why wait for a car that we do not even know its going to happen?

Hey Scott26,
Can you post any other details on these M models? For example, will the M120i make it to the U.S.? Or will that turbo 4 make it to the U.S. in some other BMW model? Anything. We're starved for information. Thanks, Leif W. |

Very true, it's not like I'd be able to shell out the extra $ for one anyway. Plus, I do like that the 1 series is somewhat of a collectible (at least for the 1st year).

by the time m135i does come out..the new 1series is around the corner...Great chance for me to see if the new 1series is ugly or has any advantage over the 135i now.
I can then decide to get M or not...:roundel:

The real question in my mind is whether or not BMW plans to facelift the E82 coupe a couple MY's in, or just leave it essentially unchanged for it's entire run in north america...:iono: |

This is nothing new. In 1992, the Euro M3 was much faster than a 964 Carrera...

The list makes some sense.
So your saying the 1-series is not going to follow the 7 year cycle, it has been out since 2004. This list was also posted well before any dates of the current cars that are coming out. So far everything is going to the list. The list is Euro release dates. |

I agree, I was looking that over and it seems more like speculation than an actual BMW road map. BMW is not going to make a big deal about bring a new line of BMW's to America (and parts of Europe) then turn around an re-deisgn it entirely in 3 years. Re-designes typically start at the top and come down threw the different series. |

The E82 debuted in 2008, not 2004. It's closer in design to the 3-series than the 1-series hatchback.
A refresh before the 2012 MY would be BMW admitting the 1 is a failure. I doubt it will happen, engines choices aside.

The new 1 series will debut around 2011, most probably with another hatch bodyshell. One year later the sedan and wagons will come out, another year later the coupe and convertible. So the 1 coupe might have a slightly shorter lifecycle (5.5 years instead of 7) that's not a big deal for a niche car. It's been said the new 1 series will have a different approach than the current one. They will provide more conventional body styles too, such as sedan and wagon - and surprise surprise, they will be bigger than the current generation. From what I've heard, I'm not even sure if they will have a hatch style for the next 1. There are also rumors that BMW will come out with something smaller than a 1, to meet the very stringent upcoming corporate fuel economy and CO2 emission standards. In this context, it makes sense to slightly enlarge the next gen 1 series and let it take more conventional (and capacious) body styles, since it will no longer be the smallest/cheapest car. I didn't count Mini because it's FWD. All these "real" BMW's will have RWD and optionally AWD.

Within a decade we'll have F1 cars with eco-friendly 2.4L V-6 engines generating the same or more output than 3.0L V-10s from 5 years ago. F1 could have stayed with V-10s and they'd be producing 1,000hp. But who cares and how is that relevant? Same goes for 600bhp, 4,000 lbs road cars. Who cares? It's been done. I'd be more impressed with M variants that significantly reduce weight and provide impressive output with smaller, lighter more efficient engines. A fuel efficient M120i in the same league as a 135i would be more of an achievement and more worthy of an M/// badge than the 'traditional' approach to creating an M car (i.e. more power, a little weight loss, etc.).

I was doing a quick google search on our friend Scott26. I found this post on another forum from 2005. http://www.carspyshots.net/showthread.php?t=783&page=6 Scott26 03-14-2005, 05:04 AM "This project was purely experimental . It was to test and develop technology and materials for future production models - It was a fun pure handling sports car and there was plans for the a driving machine unheard of . no luxury just a pure sports car. The ideas are still with BMW product planners and it is on the to-do-later shelf but not like this. With the M2 Coupe expected now to charge up to 350 BHP the proposed 2.4 powerplant is too weak to it's rivals. Expect though a go ahead to a Z2 Roadster - BMW's true Mx-5 rival." I don't think this guy knows exactly what is going on inside BMW. Why was he telling people in 2005 to expect a Z2 roadster???? |
