Besides the TL, G35, and 3 series......have you thought about the Lexus IS350(maybe in your case, the Lexus IS250).....it's supposed to be a great car....."on paper."
The 325i with minimal options....it's about the same price as the others...or maybe less.

2005 is the last year of the Acura NSX....but a new NSX is under development and would sport a Formula 1-inspired V10 motor......ready in 3-4 years.
Where's that BMW supercar?

BMW doesn't need a supercar
how bout that Z8? oh yeah it was hot, but not performance benchmark breaking the NSX was a supercar in styling only, the M3 of the day would hand an NSX it's ass and also be able to carry 3 passengers |

Well, having owned Honda automobiles for 12 years, I love them. But the 330 just drives so nice. No torque steer, obviously. The tires don't squeal when you go around bends. And the paint on the car is so much better; you can actually take bugs and tar off with relative ease. I find that, for some reason, even with a good waxing, stuff just seems to stick to Honda paint like a magnet. I don't know why. Even the paint on my Ford was better. The Honda also seems to scratch and chip easily. The 330 costs more than the TL, but I think you get what you pay for.

I've driven my 328i for 9 years and it still seems like a new car to me. In my mind BMW designs last much longer. Probably because the models don't change that much every year. With Acura and Infiniti, it will be on to the next "best" thing in a couple or 3 years.
The other thing is you don't see BMW trying to make the next "TL" or "G35". It 's the other way around. They're all trying to make the next 3 Series. |

I had an E30 for over 8 years (bought used with 73k on the clock)
sold it with 185k on the clock, over the 8 years I had one battery, one alternator go bad, car never left me stranded I just sold my 95 M3, had that for 2 years and 65 thousand miles that car only had a fuel pump die, that was it. BMW's are mechanically very very solid, the area that's a bit sketchy is computer stuff. My boss has a chevy tahoe, and his fuel pump died about the same time my M3's did, and his repair cost MORE than mine. The BMW is so expensive to repair is completely silly, any extra that you pay is well worth getting to drive such a wonderfull car |

IMHO..If you're going to own a car for 7yrs, buy an Acura or Lexus or Nissan. Many people on this board are 1st BMW owners. YES..the asian cars may look dated sooner..YES..they may not drive like a BMW...YES they WILL be more reliable than your BMW after your warranty expires. The E90 has too much electronic BS not to have some issue and the germans have NEVER been good as building reliable electronics. Germans build great engines, suspensions and manual trannies.

I'm a first time BMW buyer.....and I told my younger sister not to buy a BMW(5 series - I told her to get the RL or TL), let me be the guinea pig....if my E90 works out fine without stalling on me 3/4 years from now....then she could buy a BMW.....for now she'll stick to Japanese cars.

Tested Acura TL & Lexus ES350
Picking up 330i in Munich two weeks from now (9/15). My wife 5'2" could not see behind her in the TL, so we never drove it. The ES 350 was a beautiful interior and not a bad exterior (don't like front very much). Downside (Lexus) was the suspension, far too soft and drove like a US luxury car from the "80s". Too smooth, it was not fun to drive. Geezer mobile!

Having lived on bimmers with > 100,000 miles for most of my youth, and then a string of Japanese autos (Datsun, Subaru, Honda, Toyota), and then returning to BMW, I would say that BMWs are built to last as long as most any other car on the market. My current 323i is 6.5 years old w/ 75k miles. No mechanical problems. It will run fine for another 75k with nothing but minor repairs. And I can sell it for close to 40% (10k) of what I bought it for (25k ED). Look at (and compare) the quality of all the little parts that you can see -- e.g., hood and trunk support mechanisms. They are much better than the Japanese counterparts. Ditto for the stuff you cannot see -- the internal mechanical parts. There is a reason why BMWs are more expensive. In regard to reliability and cost of maintenance, that can be more problematic. BMW parts and labor can be expensive. But if you want a fun car that can run hard for 10+ years at high speeds, BMWs win. That is what they are designed to do. Acura and Infinity are designed to be trouble free until the lease is up (I have a different view than Socom). Of course they (especially Acura) are more reliable than most other makes (I would put Lexus and Toyota ahead of them) in most USA driving, but running fast on European roads is a somewhat different matter. A lot depends on what dind of driving you do and how you take care of your car. A BMW will last longer in my garage than an Acura or Infiniti.

Do u think newer E90 will be more of a maintenance nightmare with all the electronics? God knows the crap E60 owners were having experience with the never ending software "fixes". Have you checked the rear sub-frame on your 323? Just curious. I like (not trying to be sarcastic) your comment about Acura and Infinity being reliable up until the lease expires...Funny u mention that because I have the same feeling about BMW's (ie, crazy service intervals). To each his own. My father has a 10 yr old SL500 and it runs like a charm, Sister just sold her 14 yr old Civic (only major repair - struts @ 12 yrs). Buddy's E46 328 "non-track/babied" (rear sub-frame tear). To each his own. |

somewhat offtopic, my father had a VW Quantum when i was born and drove it till 222,000 virtually trouble free miles. i always thought that VW equated to quality after that experience..you would be hard pressed to find many, regarding quality, that would back the quality of VW |

In general, and with exceptions, American quality is not much to brag about. Interior pieces are cheap feeling and often fall off and need to be glued back on. Leather feels like vinyl. Paint chips/peels very easily. Styling, especially interior, is usually 5 years dated or more. All of these things can be said about the Cadillac CTS, which I am not a very big fan of. That is why I have always stuck to Japanese cars, and my next car will be German.

like i have said before...each of the 3 cars offers something totally different that i like then the others. the TL...prolly my 3rd choice at this point...has an awsome stereo and the best designed center console with an awsome touch screen NAV system...but FWD= no fun...nice fuel mileage. the G35 is a blast to drive. the sound from the exhaust is awsome from a sedan...better then the 330i i test drove...the BOSE sucks(and hard to get aftermarket stuff with BOSE. a lot of aftermarket stereo people wont touch anything with BOSE), but i like the intelligent key feature and i like the inteiror in the 05's with the real aluminum...most complain about the seats, but i loved them....the gas mileage sucks. the 330i is the best of both worlds. combining a nice interior with a lovely exterior and a good stereo and good mpg--hence the premium price. the handleing is the best, but the low end tourque was not as impressive, to me, as the G...but like i said the handling was out of this world. |
