long cranks turns into an 8 hr software upgrade...

I've been having long cranks in my car for a couple of months now. I figured as warranty is running out i should take it in for a look over. The service guy tells me i need to first get a software upgrade which should fix the problem (which apparently my car is 'saying it needs').

They then call me a 4pm yesterday to tell me my car needs to stay overnight as it takes 6-8 hrs for a software upgrade...

What are the odds its doesn't fix it and i will be back again with the same complaint.

To add icing on the cake, i get a filty loaner with the low fuel indicator already beeping the moment I start the car.

I had long cranks sporadically followed by a non-start/continuous crank. I took it in for an 8 hour software update. They returned the car saying it needed a cold start test- which I was happy to update them with. The next morning- longish crank followed by misifiring and lumpy idle- I returned the car with a video of the above and they replaced the HPFP.

I think it's BMW's algorithm- software then hardware.

Having said that, since the software update, my address book is now surname/firstname with no option to change it back

That's all pretty depressing news.

I was hoping at least the SW upgrade might result in more responsiveness...

Well got the car back and no noticeable change.

I was giving it a bit of a go on the way home and didnt notice any misfire / lag as mentioned, but it was a short drive.

I'll see what happens when i try and start up tomorrow morning.

It's apparently standard procedure for this process -> software update then HPFP replacement when issues persist.

Yep, but then you can buy the performance upgrade kit for $700, and get back to the original performance. I don't see anything wrong with that, do you?

My software update worked for about 6 months, then the HPFP gave up, the car drove like it was on one cylinder. Don't know why they even bother with the software update. Anyone who has had no problem after the update alone without having the HPFP replaced?

I have about 6 months left on my warranty so I'm hoping if anything fails, it does so before then...
