128i Fuel filter help
I just picked up a 2009 128i with 80,000 KMs. The previous owner lived on a farm, and most likely ran farm gas in there which isn't filtered as good as the gas station gas. I have noticed that at idle there the engine is not exactly smooth. There is just a bit of roughness to it.
I am going to replace the spark plugs, and I want to replace the fuel filter, but I have heard that there is a "permanent fuel filter" and that it is in the tank. I think there has to be a way to replace it, and I am hoping that someone here might have done it before, or have some info. I have ran some sea foam in the tank to clean things out a bit that helped a little. I have seen fuel filters cause a rough idle before, and new plugs can't hurt. I can't believe that car companies put filters in the tank

Realoem.com
familiarize yourself with realoem.com. See Fuel Supply - fuel feed and you'll see item 2 repair kit, fuel filter/press regulator, part # 16 11 7 163 295 and its $214.38 (more like $300 for us). Now if you go to "fuel tank" you'll see where it mounts. Bav Auto doesnot sell it so possible only avail from dealer. Subscribe to bavauto free catalogue and newsletters. Also there must be a good independant BMW repair facility in Calgary. I have a 128 also.
Pelican Parts = $250.75 special order likely BMW Autohausaz = $199.05 VDO Last edited by NorthernDancer; 10-16-2012 at 12:05 PM.. Reason: ad info |

That is an awesome web site...Bookmarked!!!
I have found the part at DDM Tuning for $161 plus shipping so I will go ahead, and order it. I am just having difficulty seeing where the part is located on the fuel tank page. Do you know which item number it would be? I have seen other cars that have an access under the back seats if it is in the top of the gas tank. If I can't figure it out I might just get under the car, and try to find the fuel lines, and follow them back. Thanks again for the help!!!

Just noticed "fuel pipes/mounting parts" diagram shows the supply line going to the top of the tank on the drivers side. I think I will be ordering the part, and having a look. Between this, and new spark plugs my car should be idling nice, and smooth (I am very picky about how my cars run).
I will have a busy garage in the next while. Fuel filter, spark plugs, Brake pads, and rotors, magnaflow exhaust...I have already done the transmission fluid, diff fluid, and oil change. And my stereo install is 1/2 done, and I have only had the car for a couple of weeks!!!

On most BMW's that fuel filter is located under the drivers feet UNDER the car. Yea, bmw puts a fuel pressure regulator onto the filter. I would check with any good German parts (aftermarket) store. Someplace that sells MAHLE filters. That is who makes them for BMW. I bet a Mahle one is at least 1/3 less than the BMW filter.
And yes, there is another filter inside the gas tank. Its more of a fine/sock that pre-filters the fuel before getting pumped up front to the fuel filter. WHEN you change the fuel filter up front MARK the fuel lines which is feed and which is the return line. Its easy to forget. Ask me how I know that! Also buy new BMW fuel filter clamps. Not regular hose clamps... but either the spring-y types or teh crimp on ones.(you'll also need a crimping tool for those) but they are better than a worm gear type hose clamp. And take some pics for the rest of us! DIY!! PS: you might also want to change your pollen filter and wiper blades while your at it.

pollen filter, and wipers were done with the oil change
I will have a look to see if there is another filter, and I always remove one line, attach it to the new filter, then on to the next. I used to work at an oil change center while I was in high school, and college...That is why I do all the service on my cars myself if I can

I'm also interested in the Magnaflow exhaust too. Installation, any noticable change (including noise), etc..

Can anyone locate the under the drivers feet fuel filter on realoem? I do see some other filter near the gas tank, part number 16 13 7 161 329.

Ok... most BMW fuel liters look like this... The above is an fuel filter for an e39, its located under the drivers feet, UNDER the car enclosed inside a plastic panel. This is what RealOEM.com lists the fuel filter as part of the fuel pump. I found this picture on the web. So it looks like the filter IS part of the fuel pump on a 128i. And probably a 135i. I know the 1M has a traditional BMW fuel filter under the chassis like all bmw's before. Btw... there is also another pump or transfer pump since the fuel tank is a saddle shape. So there might be a secondary pump/filter on the "other side" of the fuel tank. Dack
