That will tip even more towards evo's favor. I think EVO's skidpad or cornering ability is up there with Ferraris and Lambos.

I was actually on a list to get an Evo X MR until a couple weeks ago. That's when I found out the MR got delayed yet again (still no official release date) and decided to shop around and see what else was out there. After doing my research I came to the same conclusion as MT, the 135i is the only other car that's in the same basic class. And after reading numerous positive reviews about the 135i I decided I was tired of waiting for the Evo and I ordered a 135i instead.
I knew I'd be trading off some cornering abilities by going with the 135i, but in turn I gained a more luxurious car with a better ride and faster 0-60 times. Not a bad trade off in my book since I'm not a regular visitor to the track anyway. Dan |

The 135i is 1/2 a second faster 0-60 and a full second faster 0-80 then the evo. They never said the 135i didn't handle well, just that the evo handled like a track racer stock...which is fine if you are buying a track racer. Most of us are not, we are buying a car to drive on the streets. I would take a nice ride any day over, as they describe it.."A suspension welded to your seat". Heck, I would get a Lotus if I wanted a track car like that.
The other thing that I just have to mention is their looks. I mean come on!? The evo looks like something a 17 year old would drive. The 135i looks classy, sophisticated and polished. In my mind there is just no comparison. I would never be taken seriously in my profession if I drove up in that goofy Evo, but the 135i gives us the best of both worlds

while they're busy trying to figure out what the best competitor of the 135i is with a 5 row matrix, its staring them in the face. The main competitor of the 135i is ...wait for it.... the 335i coupe.
And lets see what numbers did motortrend get wit hthe 335i coupe: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...335/specs.html 335i 0-60 5.1 sec 135i 0-60 4.7 sec 335i lateral acceleration 0.84 135i lateral acceleration 0.94 135i quarter mile 13.3 335i quarter mile 13.7 Of course i would love to see a magazine finally do a same day comparision of the two to shut up all the people who think the 335i performs the same as a 135i. I think that these are accurate results that reflect equal power with a 150lbs weight difference. Everyone who thinks their 335i can pull off 0-60 in 4.8 is fooling themselves. BMW had given the press an overtuned 335 to get that number. Edmunds detected it on a dyno. I've posted the article before. Sad thing is the 135i gets little respect from the evo/sti crowd (not enough handling) as mentioned upthread and yet gets little respect from the 335i crowd (not enough luxury). Edit: also interesting to the see the Evo GSR and STI numbers here: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...test_data.html |

If I get my 135i in time, and can quickly put 1000+ miles on it, I plan on taking it to a BMWCCA driving school happening at Reno/Fernely on June 27-29th. It'll be kind of cool to see the actual track these guys are talking about.
Although I've never done any track driving, so I'll be a complete n00b and have no chance of posting numbers anywhere near either of the ones in that review. Dan |

I would like to see how a 135i with track orientated setup fair against Evo X. Don't think it will beat it in handling but hopefully, along with the suspension work, the stronger brakes and lighter mass will make the competition more interesting.
I am going to do autox first then move up to track.

I was impressed that MT had such a thoughtful article. They noted the important differences. They represented subjective views as subjective. And, to my surprise, they let day to day livability be the bottom line rather than track results. Bravo.

You really have to give credit to the new Evo, performance wise.
2.74 mile test laps 135i - 163.93 sec Evo - 153.44 sec Difference of 10.49 seconds thats huge. Even with no runflats, etc, etc... You are not going to make up 10.49 seconds. For comparison, Motor Trend tested the M3 sedan around the same track. M3 sedan - 154.2 sec The Evo is a monster on the track! |

That time is a misprint. It should be 156.34 for the 135i. I'm not sure where the hell they got that number. The graphic clearly shows a 3.42 second gap in the lap times. Check out the graphic: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/.../photo_12.html |

is it me, or it would be a tough call between the 135i and the STI (performance wise)??? how about I open that can of worms (if any) funny fact is my friend is thinking of buying one (sti)... I guess there would be no point in racing against each other (because I am the better driver har har har)

So, since the lines are red at the beginning that means that the Evo is winning at first. The thing that I just realized is that the distance between the two lines is about the same until the first corner indicating that cars did a running start (they didn't start at 0 mph). This may have been obvious to everyone else, but I'm just realizing this. Given this, I find it pretty amazing that the 135i only lost by 3.42 seconds. If it had the advantage is show off where it shines and start from a stop things may have been quite a bit closer as the 135i was a full 1.9s faster from 0-100mph. |
