Did the kidney grill swapout this afternoon - your instructions were very helpful. Used a modified (bent) coat hanger to pop the bottom clips and a flat blade screwdriver for the torx screws. Took about 30 minutes including time to shoot some photos. I like the way the grills match the shadowline trim. Thanks for the DIY thread.

Finally got around to doing this mod. I got the black matte ones from JLeviSW. Thanks AndyM for this DIY write up. The bottom clips were easy to remove but the first top inner clip was a bitch to unhook. I just could not get the screwdriver inbetween the frame and the top bumper trim to get the screwdriver tip to sit above the clip. After that clip all of the others were much easier. Here's the result:

Sorry, I don't have any comprehensive set of pics like in a photoshoot. Just a few bits and pieces related to specific thread topics. They're scattered here and there...

When doing this installation, do you unclip the lower clips with the right-angle tool by sticking it through the louvers in the front, or do you unclip the lower clips by coming in from the top by pulling the plastic back after undoing the 4 torx screws?

I know you have to go from the top to get the upper clips, but it almost seemed too tough to get the right-angle tool all the way to the bottom clips when coming in from the top?

I reached in from the front, through the slats.

thanks for the DIY. used a cotter pin remover for the bottom clips because Home Depot didn't have any right angle tools. Went really smoothly after I realized you could man handle the top of the bumper without breaking it.

You never mentioned about the side clip. Once you remove the Bottom then the Top what about the once on the side. How do you remove that one?

oner, as for the side clip, once you have unhooked all the top and bottom ones just pull it out and the side one will also come out. It wont snap or anything, and you dont need to use much force either.

as for the right angle tool, i didn't have access to one. instead i got a metal coat hanger, unwound it and bent the last 5mm or so with a pair of pliers and worked just as well. the wonky bit from where the coat hanger used to be wound up actually provided grip to manipulate it. just thought id share that incase anyone else doesn't have one of those right angle hook tools.

Yah this is all you need to do. It took a while 30 sec to take them off and put them on.

This worked fine for me as well; no tools required, no damage to the front fascia or grills.

I assume to do this, I will have to go behind the grills under the hood and pull them off from the inside?

AndyM,

Thanks. Your DIY is great. I also liked a short clip somebody posted. I used only a flashlight and a long flat bladed screwdriver - plus a screwdriver for the torx on the top. Took about 15 minutes. The only tricky thing is applying the right amount - not too much, not too little - to the right locations.

To the guys just yanking them off, I can see how that would work but I also can see how somebody will break the grill possibly cutting themselves doing this. I'm glad you were successful and unhurt but I think it's safer to disengage at least some of the clips. I presume you are reaching through the grill to the backside to get ahold of it so you are counting on the clips coming undone before the louvers snap off of the grill. It will probably nearly always work but if taking a couple more minutes will ensure success without injury, it seems better to me to take the couple additional minutes.

Jim

I dont know if they changed the design or not (or why they would) for 2011, but the clips on the bottom, I had to push DOWN not pull UP to release them. Pulling up made it worse, but a slight push down and the bottom came right out.

Put my grills in this morning (sorry for the cell pic), here's a before and after wash.
