$560k HKD for a 135i in Asia
so my dad calls me from Hong Kong and tells me that they're going to start selling the coupe there (they have the hatchback only) and it's starting at $560,000 HKD (that's around $70,000 USD). talk about nuts. but then cars in general there are more expensive than U.S. so consider yourself lucky!

Owning a car in HK is expensive, the parking spot at those apartment structures cost crazy amount of money to rent or buy (yes, you've to buy a parking spot and it's just another piece of real estates, like your home). Parking on the streets is near impossible to find. If you park at crowded area, good luck not getting your car all scratched up. Gas is easily 2-3x what we pay in CA. On top of all that, the fastest freeway (the one that takes you to the airport) in HK has a limit of around 70mph, and cops are known to camp there 24/7. Almost everytime my dad pick me up at the air port, he gets a ticket.
That's why I'm not going back there :P |

I'm wondering how much tariff the foreign governments add to the price of the cars being imported that force the raised cost of the the cars in these other countries. Similar to gas prices, where the US doesn't tax at nearly the rates of most other countries, and if we were taxed as much, we would be darned close to others for gas prices...

Clearly, the governments in many countries discourage car ownership or at least want the public costs more directly paid for by the users. I'm not sure why anyone would want to own a 135i in Hong Kong except as a rich toy. I'm sure it's even worse than trying to own a car in Manhattan and that's only good as an escape pod.

Yeah, I have spent some time in Singapore and cars are expensive to own there also. But, public transit is cheap. safe and clean there so it is not much of an issue to not own a car. Besides Singapore is a small island.
I believe it is $50,000 USD to obtain a license (one time fee) and cars typically cost about the same there $50,000 USD. Also, 1 ticket a year is allowed. 2 tickets in one year and you lose your license for life. You rarely see a cop car there. they are undercover or just snap a pic from a roadside camera and send it to you in the mail. Also, you are required to paint/maintain your house in good order every 7 years and if you dont they will maintain it for you and send you the bill. Sounds like a bad place to live but, it is not. No crime to speak of and it is a beautiful island. |

Was going to say.....
Have you guys heard of that big southern hemisphere island called Australia ??? That's very similar to the 'base starting' price of the 135i here And for all those wondering, if you wanted an M3 here it starts at 166k !! :eyebulge:well over 150k USD at the current currency rate... And lets not even start on the cost of fuel... |
