APEX VS5-RS (w/coding for speed/odo correction)

For the record, this just barely fits. Still on stock suspension.

These wheels look very similar to the BBS FI-R, in a good way.

I can't imagine that this -wouldn't- rub -- what has your experience been with this?

I also have a set of BBS RI-A in almost the same setup (et27 fronts). I got these mounted yesterday, and have the revised fender liners. So far, zero rubbing, but I’ve only driven it solo.

Phenomenal. May switch to these when I do my rear end.

Did apex revise their 1M front fitment? Have 18x9.5 etc 22 on my front with 275/35 mps4s. Rubs at full lock on right side.

Haha, funny you should ask. Apex customer support questioned me on this fitment (suggesting the et22 instead) when I ordered. I asked if they'd tried this setup and they hadn't, but I felt confident based on CarJunkie's geometry thread and that I was already running 285/30 rear on stock wheels. I used this tool for calculation/comparison:

I also looked into the coding aspect of getting the speedometer and odometer to read correctly from smaller diameter wheels/tires and also went with this setup because rolling diameter is almost the exact same as non-M3 E9x 18" spec.

To code the speed/odo correction, it is in the KOMBI module.

I changed these stock parameters:
Quote:
C08_K_ZAHL_TACHO
wert_03
C08_K_ZAHL_TACHO_KOMPL
wert_03
C08_K_ZAHL_WEG
wert_03
C08_K_ZAHL_WEG_KOMPL
wert_03
To what NCSDummy shows for E9x non-M3:
Quote:
C08_K_ZAHL_TACHO
wert_02
C08_K_ZAHL_TACHO_KOMPL
wert_02
C08_K_ZAHL_WEG
wert_02
C08_K_ZAHL_WEG_KOMPL
wert_02
I had originally used the Z4 (E89) settings of wert_07/wert_05 respectively until I noticed that Z4 uses different rear-wheel sensor; however, this part is the same for all E82/E92/E90 models.

I have tested using the digital, non-corrected, speedometer versus 3 "Your Speed IS" signs in my neighborhood to confirm and seems to be dead-on.
I also did a distance test of the odometer/trip-meter vs google maps distance, which also appears dead-on.

I also did a side-by-side comparison of the NETTODAT.TRC files from stock to after coding to Z4 (E89) spec. I can see that the proper values for Z4 were applied at the correct address; but it also looks like the lastWriteTime of the KOMBI module might be recorded in this module (as a checksum) and thus to write/code it, you may need to start from reading the KOMBI module's current coding and modifying from there. This kinda makes sense as it could be some sort of protection against odometer tampering.

I'd say this confirms my car's manufacturing date as April 20, 2011

Nice, this setup looks excellent. I'm glad you decided to proceed with the fitment despite my emails. Thanks for putting up with our followups.

How is the inner clearance to the front strut assembly? If I recall correctly that was our main concern.

We may have to revise the guide! Our default recommendation has been the ET22 for a number of years to give plenty of room on the inner edge, but all that testing was done at a time when we only had either 18x9.5 et35 or ET22 available as options for 18x9.5". The 18x9.5 ET28 was created as an M2 front fitment recently but it looks like it works well here. I suspect a front spacer or the lower ET22 offset would be needed if you were running aftermarket coilovers or a HAS kit that limited inner clearance.

This is definitely the tightest part of the fitment, as expected. I can barely stuff my finger (not a bear claw) between the 255/35/19 et31 setup, tightest on the shoulder of the tire to the spring perch/strut tube.

With the 265/35/18 et28, there is better clearance away from the spring perch, but only 3-4mm from strut tube (again, measured with my blind finger). I don't think you could fit a 275/35/18.

If I can make one recommendation, this is my "1M GTS" spec

Cleaned up my notes on coding the tire diameter correction for smaller 18" setup. I can confirm that running "execute job" with empty FSW_PSW.MAN will reset to stock.

After coding a few different times, I did the following sequence to try different settings:
1. Make sure time is set (it will be ---- after coding KOMBI)
2. Turn off ignition, remove key
3. Open door, Close door
4. Insert key, push start w/o clutch
5. Make sure OBD-USB is connected, COM9
6. Set FSW_PSW.MAN file to settings I wanted
7. Execute Job

I was able to get the car on a drive-on lift today, for pictures of inner clearance. Looks better from this angle than I thought it would from reaching back there.

Love it; after more than 10 years there’s still a next level tire&rim fitment presented: This is just perfection. Well done APEX, and thx for this enticing presentation. Technically the ultimate specs for 1M rims, but esthetically they are just a smidge trailing the best BBS designs. This is on my wishlist!
