You are clearly a craftsman, the quality of your work is probably the best I've seen outside the classic restoration market, where they have to use lead etc.

Great work, remember you are probably THE number 1 repairer of 1M's in the USA, which means as these cars become classics, you will be 'THE MAN' for 1M's in the USA........I can see this becoming.........TV reality show, talk show, T shirts & merchandise, a soccer team, we all know where this is heading!

Great job!

Andy, your shop is doing a good job restoring these puppies. Keep it up.
It would be more sad to see them sit in a garage, not being used.

I am a little concerned about structural rigidity, especially on the white one that had a full roof replacement. How much less stiff is that chassis compared to a healthy 1M?

It's a fair point to bring into question the structural rigidity of a vehicle that's had a roof replacement due to damage....will the vehicle preform the same as one that has just rolled off the assembly line ? I think that if you replace all the damaged sheetmetal , and measure and weld everything properly , you should be able to duplicate ,if not come close to the vehicles original rigidity...there is no way to definitively "measure" this....my only test would be to get behind the wheel and listen for any weird noises while driving and going over bumps.... I would drive the vehicle real hard and listen for any creaks or squeaks while corner or accelerating hard.... if the repair isn't done properly this might only be the way to tell.....

I worked on a brand new vehicle once from a manufacturer that will remain nameless....it had a panoramic sunroof.....the owner complained about weird noises and squeaking everytime he hit a bump.....needless to say the dealer spent countless hours chasing the noise and many parts were swapped...the noise was still there...when the vehicle was sent to me it was a last ditch effort to solve the problem before it was lemon lawed. The whole interior wasl stripped out and i was ask to look to see if i could come up with something....after simply comparing the welds on both the left and right upper c-pillars it was apparrent that one side was missing welds while the other side had them in certain spots.....maybe the machine at the factory failed to weld those areas....? After replacing the "missing" stitch welds the noises went away on the next test drive....

sooooo.....yes....care must be taken to insure structural integrity......

Rigidity contributors (strength after repair):
1 Sheet metal design (~equal)
2 Structure welding blanks (~equal, mostly situated in the lower body)
3 Spot & puncture welds (~equal, higher if seam welded)
4 Paint (might slightly decrease as the factory applies many paint baths. These 15 or more Kilograms of paint layers function as bonding in all the nooks and crannies of the structure). Application of structural (polyurethane) foams inside the hollow structures can compensate for this at a small weight penalty.

It would surprise me if the difference of any non factory paint on minor areas of the car will ever interfere with the driving experience, unless like in OP's example there are resulting noises, which he checks for.

OP, thx for the car porn

PS. you're gonna make me beg for more M stripe pictures are you?

Should my car ever have an "incident" I know where I will take it for repair. At least Andy's shop is near me.

Glassoman55 first of all your work is amazing. Really very brave to take a decision like this and get them rebuild in full runing condition. Secondly I want to ask you in which site i could search to find a crashed 1M. I'm looking to buy a second one and convert it in full track day toy. Here in Europe i don't know any site.

Thanks in advance.

And how would you compare your E46 M3 CSL to the 1M? Good taste in cars

Andrew. Its alex from old OB now with rich I can't believe you guys are doing this. When I first read your post I had to ask rich if you got all the parts you needed from him.

What a great job. I have to stop buy and take a peek next week.

BTW. To all readers. KOSTOM does amazing work. I personally have seen a lot of his stuff for very particular people with very high demands. Many thumbs up if you have the misfortune of needing his services

You know I may have to bug you to buy one. Lol.

Regards
