Alternator belt keeps slipping off

This is the second time in about 2 months that I am driving and get the battery charge failure warning message. On inspection the alternator belt has either snapped or slipped off. Again it's going back to the dealer to get it fixed.

Anyone else experienced this? Wonder if it's the pulley that's out of alignment or just bad quality belts.

There's normally a tensioner on cars for the belts, if it snapped the belt was too tight or worn down, if it slipped then it was too loose.

Well... it is safe to say it is NOT the belt! Something else pulley wise is the culprit. I would look closely at the pulleys - all of them!

It also seems worthwhile to be sure there is nothing dragging on the belt or in a pulley. I was in a car that lost it's belts when a piece of gravel flew up and got in a pulley. You case seems like it could be another bracket or something misaligned such that it is touching the belt sometimes. That could show up by a shiny spot on something that looks close to the belt. Given the clearances, a mirror on a pole, available at an autoparts store, could really help.

Good idea, I did see that the aircon pipe that had come out of it's bracket (again) was fairly close, will speak to the garage tomorrow and get them to check the clearance out.

First I have heard about it in the UK, is it a common problem ?

On inspection of the belt I did notice it was fairly cracked in places, considering this is a 2 month old belt I am very suprised.

Garage called to say the power steering pump had seized and the belt was burning trying to turn it. Melted rubber is on all the pulleys so it's a bigger job than first thought ;(

not sure, but maybe you are thinking of the seatbelt tensioner recall?

I bet there is a bad bearing in the idler, which when it binds up, causes the belt to pop.

Bad lube in the bearing perhaps?

If you are getting this often get your garage to check out the power steering pump. Mine seazed causing the surpentine belt that drives it to wear and break. New pump and pulleys and realignment was needed, been fine ever since.
