I am not sure what BMW will call this car. I will wait until the final details and specs come in. When those come in and if it priced at a point I feel that I can afford. Then I will plan an ED, debadge it and call it ///Mine.

The Question you have to ask is what is the "Obvious name"?

Because you will be surprised...

This weekend is a glimpse into the Future for BMW...
From a design point of view of looking at the Past aswell as the Future.

And an interesting vision into electric mobility for the mid-level luxury market...

http://www.**************.com/scott2...oncept-10.html

No Confusion. The second paragraph leaves off from the M1.
In a few hours in Beijing , BMW will unveil two Concepts.
The BMW Echo is an Electric driven 5er Li and the big news of a new Concept Car which relates to the premium sport's luxury segment.

BMW will also introduce a Homage to the BMW 328MM at this weekends Villa D'este. All in all a very exciting weekend for BMW.
I wonder what the significance of Scott saying the "obvious term" has been ruled out means? I think it might mean M1 as a "term". It is the obvious term to me.

He then says the question is what is the "obvious name as in name meaning a word like turbo or coupe or something else.

I think that this is a hint to the fact that the actual name will have the "M" in it as he has said before and an actual word? I may be making a big deal out of nothing....

I could Imagine they just call it "M". Because they want this car to be some kind of "back to the roots" of BMW M. To have this car as a small sporty reference car for the M GmbH.
Like McDonald... at least in Europe they have "The MAC" which is somehow the reference Burger.

What do you think?

But I also can imagine M Turbo or M Coupe makes sense.

The obvious term was ///M1, as they 'didn't bite the bullet'. There was a previous post saying that time is running out and they should 'bite the bullet' and call it ///M1.

The next obvious term to me is actually 1///M inline with X5///M and X6///M when the obvious term can't be used because of other cars although in that case, the two cars are Mazda and not a BMW.

Found these posts by Scott while digging around on **************.

Recently there was mention that they did not "Bite the bullet" when deciding which name to use, however that doesn't mean much unless you know what the "bullet" is.

The second link hopefully gives the clue:

http://www.**************.com/1-seri...tml#post457180

http://www.**************.com/1-seri...tml#post455245

Unless I am reading this wrong, I can only conclude that M1 (on its own) will not be used.

I suppose this does not rule out some derivation of M1 such as M1 Coupe.

It is what I said before. This car will not be called M1 but M1 Coupé and M1 Convertible.

I think you could be right. Isn't Mercedes adding "Coupé" to their car names now?

But not the badge on the side vents and door sills unless it is just an ///M as in X5 and X6 M.

"The key difference is to distance this car as a stand alone model and distinguish it from the current model so it allows the next generation 1er Sporthatch space to integrate itself."

This was posted from Scott - that probably means - ///M2.

If it is really going to be so, it means that the next 1 Series Coupé and Convertibel are going to be called 2 Series Coupé and Convertible. And this can also mean that the 3 Series Coupé and Convertible will be called 4 Series Coupé and Convertible, and of cours the M car will be an M4. Anyway who cares about the name. Todays M3 E92 has nothing to do with the first M3 E30. The next M3 will be even more comfortable and get FI. Very far from the M3 E30 that was a NA I4. I think the next M2 F22 will be much closer to the M3 E30 with its 2.0L I4 Turbo. All this makes sense. The BMW Supercar will then just be the Z10 Eco-Supercar by BMW AG and not M GmbH, and for this reason not called M10 or so. All this makes sense.

What this actually means is. That the M E82 1er Coupe will be as far removed in character and dynamics from the current 1er platform so that a clear line can be distinguished between the M and the incoming next generation 1er Sporthatch. This will allow both cars to go their seperate ways when they arrive on the market. The M E82 will be marketed fully to offer this distinction that it is not just an additional performance upgrade and is actually a different kind of beast. It is an M and surely that will count for much.

I'm sure BMW will find a way to put an M on it an not be an M1 perhaps something like 135M or what have you.

I'm interested in this sport hatch that Scott has mentioned. Any chance for a future 135 hatch in the states? A four door hatch 135 with AWD would be a perfect upgrade for me. I'm sure it won't happen so I'll look for the 1 series M or used M3 most likely but I can hope.

Next 1 Series Hatch might get xDrive ot rival VW Golf 4Motion/Audi A3 Quattro, but it will no more have I6, only I4.
