Air Filter Question

Wassup guys. Got a 116i (2litre petrol) and I bought a K&N filter the other day. I took the old filter out of the air box and put the K&N in the box and fitted it back in but there's no noticeable difference in sound or performance. Am I supposed to ditch the box all together and fit the filter directly onto the intake hose?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, its my first car

You shouldn't expect a noticeable difference from just a drop in filter....so yes that's normal that nothing changed other than having a clean filter in your airbox
