BMW Dealer SOP
Had my 135 brakes done (both axles) at the dealer this weekend. The front axle required new rotors but the rear did not according to minimum specifications. The question I have is I noticed the rear rotors were not resurfaced. The were not bad but hey did have a lip or ridge on the edges of the rotor. I can see and feel very light ridges on the contact/surface area as well. On all brake jobs I have performed, I have resurfaced servicesable rotors to insure better break-in and overall sevice. I know it is not always necesary, but just wondering your experiences been with your dealers.

IF it bothers you throw on a new set of brake rotors or resurface them. ? But its perfectly fine to roll with your old rotors.

Since you have an 09 I'm assuming this was done under warranty. In that case the SOP is generally do the minimum. If you were paying for it out of pocket I'm sure the rear rotors would "need" to be replaced.

First of all BMW never recommends resurfacing rotors. Dealers don't even have a brake lathe to do it.
Second the min spec printed on the rotor is a spec that dictates that a new set of pads will wear the rotor just fine even if just .1mm above the printed spec. In other words if at pad change if rotor was below then they require replacement. If not the rotors are just fine. Third rear rotors barely take any abuse as compared to the front They did fine and you will be fine also

Thanks for the replies. The fact BMW doesn't recomend resurfacing the rotors gives me the insight I sought. I know it'll be fine at 1.54mm before recommended replacement. The bedding, and hence the performace of the rear pads should not be an issue based on the current conditions of the rotors.
