Turbo Timers

Sorry i'm being lazy here fellas and not searching, but with all the browsing I've done on this forum it's a topic I haven't seen posted. Now when I had my Talon TSi AWD, it was one of the first things people recommended to get to prolong the life of the turbo back in the early 2000's. What do you guys think and do you just let the car idle now or just shut it off after you stop?

turbo timers are not needed really on the n54 engine. there's an electric water pump that runs after you shut your car off, so essentially you have a built in turbo timer. i've always driven the car lightly for the last 5 mins or so before shutting off, just in case.

Seen this come up many times, on several different forums, but it's always worth reading, to see what drivers recommend. I'm sure the replies will be numerous and varied

I've driven various turbocharged cars, since the mid to late 1980's. In general, I tried to make sure the car was warmed-up, prior to really getting on the throttle and working the turbo.

Then, at the end of the trip, I would try to drive the last mile or so fairly gently, working the turbo as little as possible. If I feel that I haven't managed that sufficiently, I will occasionally let the car idle for a minute or so.

Just a bit of care and respect for the machinery

+ 1

Our cars don't need one but it's always recommended to take it easy before you shut your car down especially after a hard run.

So far I haven't had the chance to really go out on a hard drive on my car, but generally when i get home i let it sit for a few seconds to cool off. Didn't know about the water pump running though, that's good info so thanks guys I was just surprised when looking at performance parts for our cars it was just something I never saw advertised either.

So when turbos after hard drive are heated to red and if you will stop the engine and some oil will be still in charger. The oil will burn inside of turbo that will cause on start engine turbo damage

exactly how ive always treated all my turbo cars. For me personally, since I have always driven a MT and like leaving the car in gear, Turbo timers have never been too appealing

but you def dont need one on an N54

had a turbo timer in a car and always by the time i drove through my subdivision to my house, parked the car, gathered my stuff, and then shut the car off, the turbo timer would be back down to 0 seconds already. so the only real point to the timer is if you're hard on your car, and just pulled off the highway and straight into a parking spot and shut the car down.

unless you're the ass hole neighbour in your subdivision who drives full throttle up and down the neighbourhood streets, you won't need a turbo timer.

save yourself 200+$ and just use common sense and be a good neighbour.

I also actually ended up taking it out after a while as it was basically being used only as a speed reminder and beeping at me when i went over the speed i had set for it to warn me at.

a center differential controller took it's position in the car

IMO they're kinda bling and not worth the trouble, at least in my case. Whatever you decide, just make sure it's not a Greddy. When I had a WRX, mine went nuts and randomly the timer 'forgot' what it was doing and left my car running for hours at a time. Whenever this happened, I couldn't get the engine to shut off unless I stalled intentionally I once came back from class to find I ran out of gas

i forget what brand i had.... But it definitely sometime stopped working randomly. but if it were running after i left the car, i would always stay within ear shot of the car to make sure it shut down, never really trusted it fully, and after reading that post.... well, now i'm glad i never fully trusted it!
