Tire wear

I'm not the type to peel out, slide around corners, etc...but I have a bone to pick with BMW about the tread life on my 135's tires. I just broke 10,000 miles and my tires are already at 3mm. WTF?

The run flats wear a lot more quickly than non-run flats, unfortunately. They also aren't covered under regular maintenance, which is a big bummer.

Normal

I have got used to the rapid tire wear on these types of cars. I have a 99 M Roadster with 47000 miles. It is on its 5 set of rear tires, and 4th set of fronts. These are non-run flats.

I went through all 4 tires on a quattro A6 I had in 12000 miles. I put on Goodyear GSD3s, and they went nearly 20K. I wish they still mades those tires, I really like them...I have a set on the Roadster right now.

That is also one of the concerns I had when I bought the 135 for my daily driver. I knew tires would wear like the roadster and the Audi, and run flats are more expensive than non-run flats. I guess I will figure out what direction to go on the tires when these are worm out.

I have already got used to not having a spare in the roadster, at least BMW has lifetime towing for flats on that car(Or that is my understanding...).

Tire Rack currently lists the F1 GS-D3 in both regular and run flat versions.

Thanks

Thanks, I stand corrected. I was basing my info off of a different forum on Z3s. Someone mentioned these tires were no longer available. I just checked and sure enough they have in the size for my roadster.

I turned my leased Z4 with similar tires at 18,000 without noticable wear. What type of roads around of your place?

Be aware that tread wear is not even on our cambered/staggered cars. Make sure you measure tread from the inside of the tires.

And for the love of God, man, lose the run flats.

Totally agree! The inside edge is gone much earlier than what you see on the outside. I never bothered moving the tires side to side. I didnt think it was the best thing to do. And, the less number of times someone needs to touch the rims...besides me, the better. All of the scratches that are on my roadster are from someone else either securing it on a tow truck or replacing tires. The damage the BMW car wash did is another story, that wheel got replaced .

I'm not sure what you are doing, but I'm at 19,000 miles and the rears are at 4mm (inside and out). At 3mm I will get them replaced.

It's aggrivating...I'd have no excuse if I drove the car hard and burned rubber everywhere I went. I never even disengage the DTC! Strangely enough there were two nails in my back tires this morning...good thing I bought the tire replacement warranty.

High performance tires just don't last long. That's why I go for the cheaper brand tires myself. That way I don't get as mad when replacement time comes. I usually look for my favorite brand of tires for sale and scoop them up to have ready to install when needed. Tirerack and Ebay will often have the tires you want or something you want to try for nearly half what you'd normally pay. I've already been looking, I'll need some new rears soon. I hope to find a good deal on some General Exclaims, if not maybe some Hankook V12s. I actually like Nexen tires which are very cheap but not available in the 19 size that I now need for my One.

My run craps will be ready for the trash within a month which will be about the time I put the snows on anyway. I'll probably only get about 13k out of them which would bother me if they were good tires.

Consider it a blessing in disguise.
