Engine codes are being used if the thread is about engine, chassis code if it's about exterior mods. Bottom line is the OP is either uninformed or according to his last post that he is just making a "lighthearted joke".

If in the future you decided to mod your car and a problem arises, good luck in finding the answer because you surely don't wanna go to the dealer for mod advise. Don't burn any bridge specially those that you haven't crossed yet. Good luck!

LOL at this troll topic! It's awesome.

Allencic: try checking out 1yawners.com instead, it might fit your thinking more.

Sample topics include "I drive a car"
But sometimes people get too excited though, and post shit like "My red car is fast!"

This is one of those epic, memorable threads that are often joked about, quoted, and referred to in future posts. It inspired some changes to my signature anyway.

Having said that, whether the OP meant his post in a lighthearted or joking way, any humor was lost on the 1Addicts community, because to us it makes perfect sense why we talk in code. It should be clear to the OP (especially now) that there's a reason we do this, those of which have nothing to do with pretensions.

FYI, we're not the only car enthusiasts who do this, nearly every car forum does. Nissan with their Z32 and VQ engines, All GM cars, M-Benz, etc. It's just a component of car culture. It's like talking to aviators with all the things they know, that the general populace does not. I know you say you started this thread very tongue in cheek, but honestly it backfired. It's like going to someone's birthday party, eating all the birthday cake, stealing their presents, then punching them in the face before you leave and claiming you didn't mean it. Should we chastise everyone with specific knowledge?

Oh sure, call the whole forum "precious, pretentious, and childish" and then try the "just kidding" line. Sure.

The OP just doesn't understand the very simple concept (and utility) of a technical shorthand, which as amancuso pointed out is a nearly universal component of all car forums. I would go further and say that the adoption of "insider lingo" is a common trait of any type of social group. It just happens because it makes communication easier (once you learn the ropes, of course).

The ironic thing is that the OP pretends not to care about all this stuff, yet he is the one picking a fight among strangers about it. Says a lot about him, IMO.

Anyway, to repeat myself, it is just a car. A very good car to be sure but still, just a car.
Ok, I truly don't care about the number code thing. Do I use them on occasion? Yes. Do I understand why they could seem superfluous? Yes, we also aren't using these codes in everyday life to random people. But all that is besides the point. The only issue I will take up with you is this. You are chastising and making fun of us because you take our code talk etc. to be some sort of elitist thing that we think makes us sound cool or whtvr. For some reason that bothers you. Well you my friend with this post are doing that very thing yourself. You are putting down basically this whole board and separating yourself. Your preaching to us on how we look stupid, be like me I hardly care about my bee em dablu, I only call it my "red car" is what your saying. When we talk about codes etc. I promise you there is no other motive, we purely use it as recognition, your whole post on the other hand has a completely ulterior passive aggressive motive. Quite the fallacy my man.

Guildenstern,

I promised I wouldn't have another rant but felt I should add this since you mentioned the 2002.

I suspect that most on this blog have at least heard of the BMW 2002 and perhaps a few have even seen or even better owned one. I'm willing to bet though that I'm the only person on this blog who not only owned a 2002 but bought it brand new. Out the door price around $3200.

Like my 2011 128i convert, it was great fun to drive. Maybe more fun than any of the many other cars I've owned (nearly 40 other cars - all purchased new). I hope though that my 128i isn't as unreliable as the 2002. Except for the main parts of the engine, transmission and differential, everything broke at one time or another. I've also owned VWs and Audis and while not as unreliable as the 2002, they too were far more trouble than any other makes I've owned over the years.

Because of the reliablility issue I've never owned a BMW until this 2011 convert. Worth taking a chance. Without the standard maintainance package I wouldn't have considered another BMW.

Believe me, after owning and caring for so many other cars, BMW is just another car.

Hey dude, i got some cookies for you. are you just trying to brag about being old? ive owned 5 cars, none of them new, and the 135 is my favorite. i dont think anybody is saying a bmw is not just a car? maybe if i made more money, i would be more non-chalant about my, imo, pretty badass car.

how did this thread turn from chassis codes to who owned a bmw first?

you may hang these proudly

for starting this thread

http://yournutz.com/

FYI, there is a handy BMW secret decoder chart in every issue of Roundel. This excellent publication and the benefits of membership in the BMW CCA are more than worth the small annual fee, And you get to read letters to the editor of all the hardline BMW guys lamenting the SUVs and the near-SUVs that all other BMWs other than the 1series have become.

Yea lots of cars were like that then. But the 2002 was more rewarding and more reliable (on a sliding scale) than the British sports cars that had the enthusiast market at the time. If reliability is high on your priority list you're still in the wrong ownership group. But that's ok, you have apparently bought close to 40 new cars in your life so I'm sure we won't have to deal with your "Rants"? for too long.

Just to point out from above, "the ENTHUSIAST market." From a quick perusal of your posts here a pretty clear pattern emerges that this really doesn't apply to you. While we do welcome the casual owner here and are happy to give them advice, don't roll in and bitch about how the enthusiasts do their thing. Or if you do, save it for the off topic board.
