Tire choice

I'm looking to replace my front tires, I track the car twice a year for untimed DE events, I'm currently looking to get nice coilovers(ohlins/jrz) so I'm certainly performance oriented; I'm looking at $188/tire for Bridgestone S-04's or $262 for PSS(what I'm replacing and love). As their a disposable, the price difference is large, and that's why I'm asking here for any thoughts. Is it worth the extra money? The biggest difference I see is the Bridgestone is 29lbs and the PSS is 24lbs, to me that's a huge difference, any input to help me decide?

PSS all day.....
You like them
They are lighter
Spending $148 on a 60k car shouldn't be an issue!?

YOLO.....

Good luck.....

PSS isn't a performance oriented tire, by any means.

Dunlop ZIIs, Hankook RS3s, or BFG Rivals.

I just bought 4 Dunlop ZIIs, 245/40/17 tires at $170/tire.

Performance oriented is in the eye of the beholder, I think Yolo is right, I need more of a well rounded tire than rs3's or star specs which wouldn't be considered performance oriented compared to slicks or even pilot cups, but you're right I know and like them, pss's it is.

Are PSS tires considered to be the best street tire right now?

Well rounded yes, if you don't face wet weather like we do in North West, you could probably go more aggressive (ZII / RS3)

If you are gonna spend the OPs money, you should at the very least Check your slide rule. Mine comes up with a difference of $296 for 4 tires.

The value of the vehicle is irrelevant. Doesn't matter if he is considering tires for a $15k vehicle or a $66k vehicle. The OP already indicated he has other places he is considering spending his money.

For street only duty, and the occasional trip to the track, yes.

PSS has been the gold standard for this vehicle and for this category for about 2 years. See tire rack reviews for this category.
Both the tires you are considering are listed.

Of course the PSS is a " performance oriented tire". It ain't no Goodyear INFINITREAD.

Of four categories of High performance summer tires at the tire rack...it's in the second from the highest category. (MAX Performance)

The tires you mentioned are definitely superior peformance tires (and are thus placed in the EXTREME PERFORMANCE category) and are tires for a buyer that is considering doing MULTIPLE performance events a year, not just one or two.

Funny I came across this thread as I am ordering a new set of tires today.
My plan is to go with the S-04.
I was told the PSS have softer wall which gives more comfortable ride and S-04 have more ridged walls which allows more aggressive cornering.
Like the op said, tires are disposable. So if I don't like them, I will know to not get them in the future.
But it seems like S-04's have good enough reviews from other m car forums (and cheaper) that it's good enough for me to try them out.

Thanks Mark. I'm in the process of ordering the PSS. Went to Costco, and they are verifying that they can install 265 and 285 on 18 inch wheels (I have APEX EC-7). Apparently they have strict guidelines about what sizes they can install on what cars

Wow is that really what PSS cost on your cars? I just bought a 245 set for my car last month at 160/tire.

Its worth noting that Michelin is doing a $70 mail in rebate program for the next month or so.

I just had a set of PSS installed on my street wheels (stockers). I have hankook rs3 for the track. I am very happy with the PSS as a street tire. With the softer sidewall you give up a little bit of the sharpness of the PS2 (and rs3 for that matter) but there is still tons of grip. I wouldn't say that the driving experience has suffered either due to softer sidewall. If anything the softer ride it has made my day to day drive more enjoyable. The worn PS2s were just too harsh on the sh!tty Houston roads that I drive every day. For what its worth, my girlfriend did not notice a change in ride comfort until I provoked a response. Even then, she probably just agreed with me hoping that in doing so the conversation would move away from my car...

Can't comment personally on track performance of the PSS but I think that it largely depends on how hard you intend to drive. Most serious hpde guys have found that the PSS will get greasy when you push them hard and get a lot of heat in them. If you are just going out there to have fun once or twice a year and not set blistering times, I imagine that the PSS will suit you just fine.
