Actually, I was referring to the numerous posts reported in the past over here by 1M forum fellows who got congratulations for their "new M3" by people who don't know about the 1M's existence.

As quite some people don't know the 1M, I guess that history will repeat itself as soon as the M2 is around.

I did have a similar situation happen to me. When I was buying my car and everything was all done I was getting ready to leave and a guy in a 3er pulled up right in front of me, blocking me in. He got half way out of his car and exclaimed "What is that?!?! I've never seen one of those before!" Since I was all giddy, about to drive off with 29 miles on the odometer, I was happy to explain it to him. I may have been gloating...just a little.

1M = E30
M2 = E36

was the E36 M3 faster than the E30 M3? yes.
was the E36 M3 more aerodynamic than the E30 M3? yes
was the E36 M3 more technologically advanced than the E30 M3? yes
was the E36 M3 available with more options and varieties than the E30 M3? yes

what car would you rather have? the E36 M3 or the E30 M3? Uhh...easiest choice ever..E30 M3.

For me the 1M and M2 will most likely follow this same series of questions and answers.

the 1M will forever be legendary and offer an enjoyment few other cars can match...the M2 included, IMO.

A lot of the time people have no idea what they're looking at but take a stab at it anyway... like "Nice series M."
