245 Hoosiers in the front?

Sorry for the crosspost from tires and wheels, but I figured I might have success here as well:

I'm going to pick up some R6 takeoffs for autocross. I'll be running in D-stock, so no mods except for a Hotchkiss front bar.

Anyone know if a 245 will fit in the front, on a stock size wheel without tearing itself apart?

I know it will be pinched and probably rub a bit, but 245s are much easier to find than 225s.

I had them on the front: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217773

ZHP wheels work.

Thanks. The way I'm reading that, 245s should be no issue up front on the 7.5" stock rims?

275s on 7.5" rims . . . lol.

Planning on staying D-stock legal.

You'll need to remove the alignment pin and slide the strut over, but that's about all, at stock height. Those 275's are on the 8.5" wheels, and they fit too.

FYI - Removing the stock alignment pin is currently not legal for SCCA stock class on the 135i, especially if you are adjusting the alignment settings from stock.

It probably won't be an issue at local events, but if you ever plan on doing an bigger event (National Tour, ProSolo, etc) you would be opening yourself up to protest.

Is this definitively still true? I had heard rumors that the 135 was grandfathered, after the 335 does allow for the alignment pin removal, since it's the same geometry and setup.

ZHP wheels aren't D-Stock legal either, 8" front is wider than stock. Will 245 still fit on a 7.5?

Did you have any rubbing issues with the 275 in the back?

Well, I know somebody who did run 245/275s on those ZHP wheels in Topeka two years ago. I believe there were at least two cars that year with that setup.

No rubbing with the 275s on ZHP wheels, as noted in the link I provided.

I see "Matt Murray" in the results for D-Stock for 2008 Nationals. Was he running the ZHP + 245/275 tires then? They allowed it?

Could be an interesting choice if it's allowed, I rather like the ZHP wheels on a 1 series.

The dealer had drilled out the pins on my car when the previous owner had the front struts replaced under warranty. I'm kinda stuck with what I got and I'll steal the extra alignment if I can.

Not planning on doing any regional events until the pin issue is cleared up. All the local people are aware of the adjustment and don't care (or at least they don't till I start beating them )

Need to get a firm answer on this shit . . .

But yeah, a 245 will fit on a 7.5 rim . . . it's over sized, but it should be safe.

The ZHP rims shouldn't be legal, unless I'm misreading the rules. The rims have to be the same size, width, and within 5mm offset of a wheel size which is provided, from the factory, with the car.

I think the guy running the 275s on the front was on a stock size wheel (crammed on there).

245 fits on an 8 inch rim with about 1/8th of an inch clearance from the inside rim to the shock body.

Gumpy.

I've talked to a couple SCCA officials and all of them have said that until BMW specifies it for the 135 it is not legal to remove the alignment pin for stock class. Hopefully BMW will get its act together and just specify it... I'm guessing we would see a few more 135s at Nationals if this was the case. I think there is 1 car this year in DS with 2 drivers. Last year there was only 1 car running in DS ladies class...

Yes.. it was Matt Murray, here's a photo at Nationals of the car on course..

It is actually Strelnieks car, Beth won a ProSolo in it that year if I remember correctly. Fairly certain they were Breyton GTS-R wheels...

Yes... I think he did run the Breytons too. I'm pretty sure.. 18x8.5 x 4, but I could be wrong. I got the feeling from quite a few folk that it was believed that the 8.5" wide rear wheel made it possible to run 8.5" x 4. Not sure if that's wrong, but I've seen others use the same logic as well.

FWIW, 7.5" wide wheels are offered now, but I do not believe they were in 2008.

THE PIN!

I got this from the BMW TIS (... don't ask):

The centering pin (which is just used in assembly) is the suspect part. It does not specify that it need be replaced.

Well there you go!

Also, you can't adjust the camber, if you replace the pin. Since the e9X cars had this same note, it was only a matter of time before the e8X cars were allowed to have the pin removed as well.

That TIS is 12/2007 vintage I believe . . . it's old news.

Why's it taken someone this long to figure this out?

Hmm, that's odd... I know 100% sure, as of late last year even that BMW did not specify removing that pin for the 135i....

Can we get some explanation for the clueless (me)? I'm relatively new to auto-x so never had to bother with camber or anything. Anyone care to explain what needs to be done here?

That alignment pin is only used for production to help align the parts but is completely unnecessary for the car? Removing it allows more negative camber and a chance to run wider tires?
