What the Hell - Diff!!

So the wife and I are trying to sell the car and we have a woman who is keen to buy. So I take the car when she organised her mechanic at BMAutowerks (Oakleigh) to do a mechanical check.

Then the fun starts; he tells me that that clicking sound that I hear when the car starts off is the Diff having ~15 deg of play before engaging!!!! Aparently the movement has been loosening the bolts on the prop shaft (now a Roadworthy issue).

Funny, because it sounded like it was always like that since I bought the car last year (6800 km). It also came with a Roadworthy and when it was serviced at Bib Stillwell in Nov, they gave it an ok and it passed the safety check.

Lucky for me I purchased the extended New Car Warranty from the dealer I bought the car (Prestige Worl Cars). I don't trust those dealers now, but the Warranty company (Elite) said that they would start going about organising having to replace the diff (Recommended by BMAutowerks).

Question is, who should I get to do it? Also, how much would a E87 120i diff be? I wouldn't want to have some dodgy mechanic friend of Elite doing it.

Lesson 1: Know what you are looking for when you buy a car.
Lesson 2: Get the extended warranty on any car.

I hate hearing stories like this, and that's just bad luck - sorry to hear it

Luckily with the lease, my financing company have the car on a personal warranty for the lifetime of the lease, so genuine parts are guaranteed as long as i'm the owner of the car and hold the lease. I made entirely sure of that as i didn't want to be rolling over the lease in 4 years on what could be a lemon on second-hand or non-genuine parts.

I would firstly talk to the dealer that sold you the car, and ensure they replace it under warranty. Then notify your mechanic of the issue.

Hope it all works out - let us know!

LSD on a 120i.....After 4 years with my 120i I had the rear step out twice, and it took cornering over tram tracks in the wet to invoke any sort of wheelspin.

Indeed! I don't even drive the car like that anyway. Maybe in my old Laser...

I would go to someone I trust. For me that would be Andrew at Southern BM. Actually it's more like his car these days anyway as it has been there for 2 months and I have almost forgotten that I have a 135i. Lol.

I'm not sure he'd do it, because when I spoke to them last year, they mentioned that my warranty compant (Elite) are notoriously bad at paying them, having dealt with them previously.

Then again, the guys at BMAutowerks said the same thing.
I'm definitely not going to allow any work to be done at any non-BMW place. And judging by their misjudgement, not at Bib Stillwell either...

It's all about price. Elite will "recommend" their repairer (or at least sourcing the part) if they can get it cheaper.

I can tell you can easily spin the rears much easier with the 120D . In the wet, traction off, hold it in M2 in a step.

whats with the extended warranty? if your car only has 6800 kms on it shouldn't it still be under manufacturer's warranty?
unless off course you bought the car second hand...
