TPMS question...
I plan on getting a set of 17in wheels for my winter tires. Do I have to worry about the tpms sytem when looking for a set? I'm not looking to go broke on 17's (especially since they will be winter only). I found a set that was pretty cheap, but I don't know how the system will be once I swap the wheels. Thanks for any advice.

If you don't want to use wheel sensors, you'll be putting up with the minor bother of having the small warning light go on...no chime. If you're just using the wheels for a few winter months, it may not be worth spending $175-200 for sensors, or mounting/dismounting your summer wheels/tires to take the sensors out.

Is there a way to bypass the sensor so it doesn't keep on lighting up? Wow, the sensors are expensive!

Has BMW stopped using wheel rotation speed, measured by the ABS sensor, for TPMS then? I always thought that the system didn't need anything additional?

clived,
In the great US of Eh...(USA) they use a device in the tire. This I was told by a super great tire guy that it's because of some tire lawsuit years ago. Most of the world use a (KISS) system. You can do a search here at 1addicts to find other posts. It's all here. Anyway, if you can live with the light being on all the time, and not know from the car if you have a flat, you are "OK". The other work around I was told was take 4 sensors and wire them up in the car trunk. Can't quite remember how that was done, but personally that is only for ppl who already have their tires. If you really want to not have that light, maybe a post-it-note over the light? LOL If you want more info on how it all works... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_pr...itoring_system EspressoBoy PS This has been talked about a lot already, remember to use the search button. |

the FTM system used the ABS sensors and so it didn't need any additional sensors. That was used on pre-March 07 models but all the models after that came with TPMS.

For the 1 series I believe they all come with TPMS because they were just released recently. On the 3 series (as well as other series), TPMS was not introduced on pre-March 07 models. It was only after that period did they put TPMS in all their cars.
