anyone notice a ticking sound near drivers side?
i have this faint ticking sound when car is at idle...i will try and post a video/audio clip...its very strange and just has begun...i have 700miles on the car now...its nice to know that im covered under warranty i can usually tell just by hearing or seeing the noise and its location....but this one has me stumped....i heard the wastegate issue youtube clip and its DEF NOT THAT...thank goodness lol....if you open the hood and look to the right of the airbox its right in that area....if it continues after my 1500 break-in i will be calling the dealer to check it out....just wanted to know if anyone has this faint ticking sound which is starting to get on my nerves

I just started noticing this when it started getting cold... It's not just on the driver side ... sounds like its coming out of the engine, my z4 used to do this after revving the hell out of it, but my 1 doest it when I first start it . . . sucks.

Solution to ticking noise?
I hear that too, it seem to have started when I got colder... Now along with this stupid ticking noise there's a whole lot of other weird noises coming out of the speakers - it looks like some sort of electric interference.
Anyway, did you guys figured a solution to this ticking noise? I've scheduled an appointment at BMW this Monday, hopefully they'll be able to figure it out. edit: by the way, the noise seems to come from the speakers, not from the engine or something like that. Also, it's always there, from start and regardless of what I do (high or low revs). My only "solution" right now is turn the radio very LOUD. :/ |

I hear it in both my 135i and in my wife's X5 3.0 when they are idling. It is an identical sound from both vehicles and from generally the same area. I asked about it at the dealership and they told me it was the A/C compressor cycling because we had our climate control set to auto. Now, I took their word for it, since it was coming from both an N54 and an N52 in the same conditions/locations and never tested to deny this info.

I've noticed the same ticking, mostly in the winters. Sounds kind of like the lifter tick I'd get from my E36 after an aggressive autocross run.

I hear it too. Every time i start the engine. I'm assuming it's not a problem since so many others hear the same sound and with different model cars (all BMW's). I would like to know what it is though.

I hear both sounds (dknybmw31 and SixBanger), I think this thread is referring to that recorded by Six Banger.
I only notice it when my window is down (like at a drive-thru).

But regardless, this ticking noise is ridiculous - we pay big bucks for a high quality car like a BMW and shouldn't accept this kind of thing. To me that's not the 'ultimate driving experience'. I will try to record a video with these noises I'm talking about, hopefully my cell phone will have enough sound sensitivity to pick it up. edit: I'll try disabling the auto cycling AC to see if the at least the ticking noise goes away. BTW, I love my BMW 128i - it's an amazing car to drive (except for small things like that) Thanks for all your replies. -- Wagner |

Haha weird enough I find this thread. I noticed it waiting at the Wendy's drive through just at lunch. I had the heat on level 1, and nothing else, so I assume it was a belt or something heat/AC related. I'm glad I'm not the only one. -Marv

I hear it too. My guess was that it was the direct injectors cycling. When we (in Michigan) finally get out of the deep freeze, I will look more closely for the source.

Pretty sure the ticking is from the direct injection.

As promised, I've made a video to record these noises I'm talking about:
I'm taking the car to the dealership this Monday, let's see if they can at least reduce the noise - it's really noticeable - my passengers comment about this. BTW, I also have a lot of wind noise coming from my frameless windows (which I've read here that its another common problem). So when I'm driving at high speeds I almost don't need to listen to radio, the car it self produces enough decibels to literally give me a headache. It's not fun. Thanks for your replies guys. |
