Can you explain this a bit further? I haven't encountered any problems with my steptronic yet

Does it fix the soft-stop related lurching issue, the car I test drove had it really bad - made me glad that I went for a manual.

My suggestion is to use the steptronic feature of your transmission and downshift into proper gear. |

^ exactly.
why use regular mode and do kick-down for the car to downshift when you can use manumatic mode and downshift faster yourself..

The automatic on my 2002 325i was the smoothest I've ever driven. There were no perceptible shifts whether you were gently pulling away or flooring it. It was a thing of beauty. My 2006 330i auto has been a disappointment in that regard. The shifts from 1st to 2nd vary from barely noticeable under extremely light acceleration to obvious and sometimes jerky in medium acceleration to downright rough when punched. Also the car seems to hold 1st too long. In normal non-sport mode it should shift more quickly to 2nd since 1st has such low gearing. The shifts have improved somewhat as the car's been broken in, but I'm hoping the software upgrade will fix the only thing about the e90 I like less than the e46.

When I want the car to stop it does so VERY quickly. Great brakes.

I had the problem on an Australian 325, so the 2.5l steptronic, as I said it could have been an early build example, but it definitely did the lurch thing, and I felt like an idiot.

There could be confusion between the US/Canadian 325 (having the 3.0) and the rest of the world, so I pointed out that it was indeed the 2.5l I drove, for the benefit of others... The issue could either be an early build problem, or a problem with cars from a specific factory. There are people who have the problem and people who don't would be interesting to know if all these people have the same VIN factory code... or a build date before a certain time... Perhaps it is even a phychological issue where you just have to drive the cars differently, ie just jam your foot down on the brake. I subconsciously ease up, perhaps that isn't what the soft stop likes to have happen.

Frankly I'm fed up with this car. It's a great car when you're not braking or steering (shimmy vibration)...I happen to have the need to do both! I'm getting rid of my 745 and this 3, both have been a pain since day one. -Chris |

The smoothness of stopping was improved with a software change they made a couple of weeks ago. I don't know the official name of the software update, but I do know the car now stops very very smoothly now. I did not think I had a real "problem" before this s/w, but it sure is different now.

My 325 was made at Lipszig (sp?) according to the VIN. I took possesion end of May. I had the acceleration hesitation for a while, but it seems to be gone now. My brakes work excellent other than a bit of a squeek below 2 MPH since the pads didn't get "seated" properly.

I think there is an issue if it slips at every stop
from what i've experienced, in a normal breaking situations - the car should stop as normal in emergency breaking situations - the car will come to a complete stop asap i have only felt the soft stop on those in between breaking situations...like when the light changes and you decide to stop rather than go through. Alot harder than normal than you would normally apply the breaks, but not exactly completely slamming on the breaks. In that case i have felt the car slip. It works well in the sense that passengers aren't subjected to a snap back change in momentum on a hard stop. unneccesary feature? perhaps (assuming your breaks are functioning as they should) if you jam on the breaks and apply unneccesary break force, you are most likely going to engage the soft stop feature about the hesitation...i never really noticed it, but a couple of my friends have. but the issue is probably because the car will start from 2nd gear in both modes unless you manually select 1st ie, a lag you would feel trying to start from a complete stop in 4th however in the manual mode 1st gear seems too short if you are trying to drive aggressively, since the revs will be too high before the step wants to let you go to 2nd although it is responsive from a dead stop in DS and you don't change the gears yourself so, who knows the gear ratio could use some tweaking to be ideal |

well there you go. it is evident that some cars do and some cars don't without any apparent rhyme or reason - at least from the variety of posts.
thankfully, mine does everthing it is supposed to do and nothing it is not. my 325 was in the first shipment of 325 into the country so iam very surprised to learn that at least one 2.5l 325 has the problem that i so confidently though may have been very early production issues and/or was country specific. obviously not. well for all those who still suffer from the dreaded lurch and/or hesitation, i hope the fix comes around for you sooner rather than later as it has already been too long. hopefully the sept update addresses these and other problems. drive safely.

Had the update, got my car back yesterday. If you are driving an auto with the lurching/hesitation issues, go and get the update.
Mine is now a different car completely. Smooth, quick shifts, no judder - seems a little quicker too. Would have been nice to have been paid by BMW for testing their new model for them over the last months though........ Regardless, I am now a very happy customer. |
