Long trips, 500, 1000+ miles...do you drive the 1 or a get a rental car?

are you kidding? road trips are the best part of owning something 'fun'

drive your 1er. It's not a Bugatti. I drive my 1M at least 125 miles *a day* as my DD. That's what cars are meant for....that's what you paid money for. If I take a 500 mile trip I would for sure take my car....unless I had to take 5 people or something...in which case I'd rather just ditch one of them and still take my car.

I would rather drive my own 128i than a rental, lol. Part of the fun of a road trip is the drive and it's way more fun driving the 1 series than a cheap rental IMO. Only reason I would consider otherwise is if there's more than 4 people or if everyone is over 6ft tall and everyone really wants to take one car.

I have some friends that do this and I see it as extremely weird. If you have your own (fantastic) transportation, why would you rent a second form?

The only way this makes sense is if you are at risk of going over miles on a lease and a rental is somehow cheaper.

Just got back from a 1500 mile trip down Highway 101 as my passenger screamed most of the whole way down... Till I let her drive...

Thought about renting a CTS to beat the crap out of, but this car is just way too fun to drive... I let my passenger take the wheel for a while and she found a couple of Audi's to play with on the way down and was amazed at the experience..

She initially took it a for few miles and was hitting corners perfectly.. 200 miles later, she had great comments on the front HK sway bar we installed and that I needed to get rid of the run-flats as they, "tend to shovel a bit during mild understeer.."

In "short".. Take the 1... Nothing like it.. The car sang for the whole trip..

I just did a 2K mile roadtrip for work over three weeks. It was cheaper than flying and I did it with a friend. Also work paid for it.

My car is 6 years old, modded, and has 105k miles. Its fun to bring on a roadtrip (ask me how I accumulated all those miles ). Especially when one of your work stops is Charlotte, NC and you have a free day to hit up the Dragon.

Also, you get to pose it in front of random things that you find!

Why would you have a 128 if you didn't want to drive it? Going out west next month and will be putting on about 7k miles on it and will love every second in it. It's all about the drive.

We recently drove our 128i M-Sport convertible to Charleston, SC. and back with the top down all the way. About 400 miles total driving, and it just wouldn't have been as much fun in our 335i sedan.

For me it depends on whether the trip is for work or personal. For work, I do what is cheapest which is typically renting a car. If I were gone a week, taking one of mine would be cheaper. I might still take the old Suzuki SUV, however, to avoid miles on the bimmer. But if my wife is along, I would take the bimmer. We've taken it to the Orlando area for cruises twice now. I've also taken it up into the Asheville, NC area in the fall nearly yearly since purchasing it. I may take it to visit my daughter in Illinois before too long. It is very comfortable on long trips. The Zuk or a rental is OK but the bimmer is nicer, more powerful, and quieter.

Actually, I have a car that I use for long drives. If I only had my 1er and I was going to drive cross country then I would rent. I would rather put the miles on someone else car than mine. It depends on the driving too. I made a few rocket trips from south Florida to Michigan (only stopping to get gas) and in a driving situation like that where the car was strictly utilitarian then I would hate to throw the miles on my 135. But, (since our roads are boring here) if I lived out west, that would be a different story.

I love that people are afraid to put miles on a car. Its like a direct gauge of how much use you actually get out of a vehicle, and people try to keep it as low as possible. Why even buy it if your goal is to keep the mileage so low?

We picked up the car from the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, and had the most enjoyable and relaxing 2-day backroads drive back to Ohio. Highly recommended. In bad weather, or stuck on the interstates with tons of big rigs and drivers that don't understand driving in a pack, I'd rather drive the SUV.

The 135is is my daily driver. Just passed 10K miles in 11 months. Considering my daily round trip commute is only 10 miles, that's a LOT of driving just to enjoy the car!

You take the long way home via Indy.

My rule of thumb is 3 to 4 hrs or less each way for customer visit, I'll drive the 1er. I get standard IRS rate of reimbursement. If I go over that, I'll compare airfare vs rental. Chicago is about a 5-6 hr drive (depending on traffic and road construction) and it's a killer with the crap roads getting there. I'd rather take out a rental and beat the crap out of it and not worry about bent rims.

For vacation trips: if it's only me, the 1er. If the wife goes along I have to take the CX7 since she packs heavy. Ask my back about that.

Farthest I've gone in my car was ~300 miles (one way) from my home. Daily commute of 70 miles so I've put on 40K in the last 3 years.

Can't imagine taking it on a long road trip with backseat passengers (kids) or any amount of luggage (especially with full size spare in the trunk).
