BMW Performance Air Intake Installed

I picked this up and installed it today. It took about 25 minutes and ten of those were spent looking for the correct tools.

I must say this a nice unit and I know many (Stig) will say that there are no performance gains but it sure felt like it on several runs today.

Combined with the performance exhaust it makes a very nice racy growl under acceleration.

See the picture below. Half of the existing air box is reused and it did have the carbon element. I'd prefer to remove this but there didn't seem to be any easy way to do that short of hacking it up.

From left to right: New air box section with K&N oil filter (K&N came with this BMW unit), old air box with paper filter, and old air box section with integral carbon filter. Does anyone know if there is a way to neatly remove the carbon filter? And should I?

P.S. I disconnected the battery during the install per the instructions. Can I or should I reset the stored adaptive transmission driver settings? Is this even possible to do? If so, tell me how.

No gains. Just sound gains and better breathing perhaps. If you had the euro performance intake then maybe there would be a more noticeable gain in torque perhaps. But who knows.. a couple of horsepower maybe?

And the carbon filter delete is just cutting it out. Probably with a box cutter or exactoknife

As far as I'm concerned, no gains with the Euro setup either. Looks pretty though.

I found the same. No gains with PI in my 130i and it does have the Euro version. I concur it looks nice and who knows, maybe it does 1 or 2 hp more but nothing you can tell.

There have been a number articles about how much power you have to add before it is noticeable and the general consensus seems to be in the +8% neighborhood.

Hence why people always use vague terms like "feels like it breathes easier" and manufacturers remap the aggression of the throttle to give it a jerky feel and the illusion of speed.

I hope this is not the case of my chosen map. I requested linear throttle mapping. I hope i did the right choice.

It's not. Evolve doesn't do such things unless you request it. You will have a lot more low end torque though.

Oh, I was not referring to Evolve´s engine tune, but my choice of throttle mapping.

The BMW performance exhaust does give a nice growl. I was trying one out when I was on the market, it sounds better than the stock 135i.

I think you might be in the wrong section.

I used a dremel to cutout the carbon filter when I installed the BMW Performance intake. Sand edges smooth. Use an air compressor to blow out small pieces of plastic leftover.

135i exhaust options aren't really all that relevant to the 128i section.
