Removal of BMW Performance Stripes

I bought my car last year and it came with the stripes. I don't really like it but decided to keep it for a year since I paid for it. It's going to be a year soon (Dec, 09) and I was wondering if removing it is a DIY job? Or do I have to bring it to a professional just to remove it?

I would try using a hair dryer set to HEAT and work one bit at a time. Then clean any residue with some mild cleaning detergent.

A heat gun or a blow drier should greatly ease the removal. After that there are many products to remove any residue left over. Goo gone. 3M adhesive remover etc. Its not all that difficult, just a bit time consuming! Good luck

No heat needed. Get it started w/ your fingernail and just pull. I found it helps to pull it similar to how you pull the 3M hooks from walls, stretching the sticker as it comes off. Does a better job of pulling the glue with it.

Normal citrus-y Goo Gone afterwards (the citrusy one, not the xylene / toluene or whatever one) along with something non-abrasive like a soft towel.

That's all it took for me, and a wash and wax afterwards to remove the Goo Gone. Easy.

I was able to remove the hood stripes using a hair dryer. Took longer than I expected. Probably because of the 20% residue left. I was able to remove the residue with the use of Goo Gone as suggested. No discoloration. Will post pic later after I remove the roof stripes and after when I get home.

I'm planning to leave the stripes in the trunk. What do you guys think?

Careful depending how long they been you might end up with 2 different whites on your car with the white under the graphic being less faded

Update: trace bullet is right. No heat needed. It is actually better if there is no heat because the sticky part is going to stick on the vinyl and not on the car. No residue would be left behind once you remove it. It's like peeling off a sticker out of your car. Currently removing the roof stripes as I type this and yes, 0% residue left, but still have to use goo gone 'cause of the edges. I think water will do.

Note: For the hood. Allow your car to cool down so the hood and the vinyl won't be too hot. Otherwise, there is a high chance that a residue will remain on the car and I swear, learned by experience, that residue is going to be hard to remove even with the use of goo gone. Will post pics in a bit.

You can use 3M™ Adhesive Remover. It works great on removing the "sticky stuff".

Here are the pictures.
On process of removing it. There are some lines being left behind and I think that's probably dirt and my car is dirty that's why you could see 2 shades of white.

Then Goo gone to remove the line.

That is all. Thank you for all the suggestion and support!

Yep the goo gone was just needed on the very edges of where the stickers were. My guess was that that little bit of adhesive just didn't want to come up with the rest. But - it was exposed to the elements so who knows what little changes it went through.

Did you freak a little when you first saw the dirty little adhesive lines left? I did, because mine weren't so much along the stripes but more at the ends where they hit the gaps around the door (I had the body stripes not the hood stripes). I thought some fool had taken a razor blade and cut the stripes to length, now I know it was just adhesive, possibly more there than elsewhere if the stripes had shrunk a little.

Looks like you got it. Cool!
