Hmmm... I don't know, why don't you list price and specs for both vehicles.

I think the M1 is still a real possibility, but not right away. If it happens, it will come a couple of model years into the 1 coupe. Along that timeline, I can see BMW dropping the 135i in favor of an M1, introducing a 130i coupe (discussed in another thread) as a replacement for the 128i, and offering smaller engined (perhaps deisel) entry level models... Keeping the 135i and an M1 in the same lineup would crowd things up too much... unless the M1 turns out to be more radical than has anticipated...

+0.5

i've frequently thought the same; however, then i remember we now have a 335 & m3. although comparatively speaking i guess the 135 is a bit more M'd up than the 335 (suspension & braking).

True. Haven't taken the time to clarify, but it the M stuff confirmed as standard issue for the North American 135i?

Main point I'm making that that evolution of the 1er is inevitable, and history provides lots of clues as to the the direction in which it will evolve.

If you look at the BMW 1ntensity site for the US we get the M-Aero kit, Adaptive Xenon lights, Sport Package as standard on the 135i. I suspect that the other M-bits will have to be ordered as a package (which includes the 261 wheels). I was hoping for a separate option for the M-Steering Wheel, but I suspect we won't get it expect as part of the big M-package.

I'm wondering, assuming the 1-Series does eventually get a true M version, if the suspension bits (spring height/rates, shocks/valving, sways) will be the same as the 135i or not.

yeah, the brembos, suspension and aero bits have been confirmed if thats what you mean?

i have quite a bit of faith in the M1 in just the way spudwest said though, replacement of what will later be thought of as a limited edition (sort-of) 135i, with similar rearrangement of the model lineup. i think the main focus will be weight savings, balance and rawness - if it is to finally fully manifest this e30 and 2002 rebirth which bmw has been touting. and thus i think it will require different tuning (sways, springs, dampers), and will no doubt be intentionally a bit more hard and raw than even the 135 m-bits. i believe the best comparison was made on here as sort of the difference between the M3 and the CSL..

i really do think there will be an M1. however the best reason brought up that there will not is the fact that there would only be a couple of years left in the design until BMW would redesign the 1er. but i dont know if a redesign of the hatch would dictate a new coupe as well, since its only coming out now..

i like how we run out of press release & pics and just start talking about the same things over again haha.. ah well

EDIT: although i REALLY hope it doesnt look like that photoshop/rendering. although i hope they do something with the headlights. something "squintier"

This is what I think:

There will be NO 1-series based M1. Put it this way the 135i comes standard with an M aero-kit (this is the only car where the M aero-kit looks just the same as the one on the actual M cars NO FOGS, all other cars get the one with fogs) it has an M suspension and huge breaks. The car has 300hp and will do 0-60mph in about 5 secs.

Those are the facts so now lets ask some questions. What engine is BMW going to use on the M1 if there is one? The S54 343hp from the E46 M3??? I don't think so its too close to the power output from the N54 twin-turbo. Plus we have all seen what this engine can do with Procede or Xede and BMW knows this!!!!

Okay so now lets say BMW M comes out with a new engine that produces close or equal to 400hp . That would be too close to the M3 and it would hurt the sales on the M3.

They will not use a tweaked version of the N54 because the M Division only develops High Revving Naturally Aspired engines, this is what they are known for!!

Another fact is that there is already an M1! Produced from 1978 and 1981... and something very important: this is the first M car ever created and BMW will not name another one of their cars the same. Unless its a comeback and the car would be a supercar (over $100,000).

The 135i has too many things a usual M-Sport spec doesn't have and this makes it very special, and maybe BMW would have liked naming it the M1 but they couldn't. They couldn't put an LSD ... so they gave us this new electronic differential....The car is Turbo not N/A so it cannot be an full M car.

They should have made a 125i with the 218hp I6 engine, a 130i with 27?hp I6 and then an M car with the tweaked S54 from the M3 CSL.

Sorry about the long post but I had to get this out of my head. and dont get me wrong I want a 135i very badly, but i am very sure there will be no M1.

I think the 135i looks better than that photo of the "M1" mockup...

I actually like the M1 mockup, except for the antenna. I could definitely do without that.

I wasn't too sure about the M1 either. I know a rep for BMW North America and he was the one who told me about the M1 to begin with. He was saying if it does go into production, BMW was thinking 2010. That's why I was asking. But I still want and will have my 135i. I like the photoshop version of that 135 cause it looks sportier for some reason; maybe it's the color, or the HIDS.

I also ask what motor could they put into the M1 and have it really be a clear difference from the M3 and the 135i....

the 135i looks to already be 'similar' in
performance (but not feel) to the E46 M3.

If i was bmw M.

I would make from the 3.0 atmo 130i engine. That s a light engine. An M engine. Hp around 320 a 330 hp.

It has no use to put in the e46 m3 engine its way to heavy. The 135i engine is lighter than the m3 engine. So better stick with that then.

I have several thoughts on the whole M1 idea. First of all, the only direction to go from the Biturbo Straight six in the 135i would be the biturbo V8 that BMW is working on. I think that BMW is pushing the limits of N/A engines and that eventually the M-division will have to start working with turbos because the technology is there and competitors like AMG will otherwise win out entirely in the HP war. If the focus of a M1 was not the engine, then I believe they could also tweak the biturbo straight six from the 135i slightly, then add a bunch of stuff to reduce weight, enhance handling, and up the M-ness. Specifically, they could add a carbon fiber roof, change the mirrors, add a LSD (which every single BMW should have), swap the wheels/tires for a slightly wider more aggressive setup and add a billion M badges. BMW did something similar to this before they introduced the E36 M3 in the US. Specifically, they made the M-technic 325i which was identical to the M3 in ever single way except for the engine. The ultimate point however is that it simply is too early to speculate and as much as I want an M1, if the 135i comes out for sale in march I'll be among the first people to buy one.

i dont like the front bumper of the M1 photoshop there. where did that originally come from too? looks like a samurai sword version or something (i dont even know what that means)

Feli_330i: its all speculation so theres no reason to use that many exclamation points. word is that yes, it would use a revamped S54 from the E46 M3. and a lot of revamping can be done: aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder liners, direct injection ..shit, the new M3 V8 weighs less than it does, theres lots of room to work given new developments, and starting with the S54 as a base is pretty gangster if you ask me. again i believe the focus will be weight reduction, the 1 series is pretty hefty, add a carbon fiber roof and some other costly (but worth it) lightweight bits and youve got yourself a true-to-bmw, smooth and high revving, small frame, rwd, blast from the past. the only thing i can say is i cant imagine on them improving on 6-piston brembos. and here is where i restate everything i said in that last post, did you read or skip all of it after i said i thought there would be one?

search for comments from SCOTT26 regarding the issue, many of which are quoted in the other thread of this discussion. perhaps my main point is that it is not going to fit in with the 135i and M3. it will replace the 135i after a few years, and will do so elegantly and in true bmw fashion.

BMW have mentioned on multiple occasions that there wil never be a car named M1 again. They will not step over their pride and joy, the orginal M1.
