E82 135i "build" by JD
Hey Ladies and Gents,
As a short term poster, but a long term lurker I have gleaned much information and knowledge from the 1addicts, e90post and N54Tech forums. As such I am hoping this thread serves as a means, to give a little back to the N54 community, as I document the progression of my "build". A few of the regular readers may know the vehicle and my forum name, in lieu of the recent pics I posted in the VMR wheel thread. Ya, the Sapphire black 1'er with the tough Gunmetal VMR V710's, is my car. Since the New Year, I have been very busily taking full advantage, of the ridiculous aussie dollar. I am very happy to report that some of the goodies I have purchased, have found their way onto the vehicle, courtesy of the fine spanner work of Dale at Advan Performance. Much like my car, this thread will remain a work in progress for some time. I will continue to provide updates with regards the development of the build, as time permits. Anyway enough dribble from me, onto something far more interesting, dyno graphs, hehe. The dyno graph presented shows the stock'ish vehicle, as measured when rolling on the 19" wheel and tyre combo. I say "stock'ish" as there are several modifications made to the vehicle, but thus far only one could be considered power inducing. That being a Dinan cold air intake. N.B. I had every intention to remove the modified Dinan air box lid and re-fit the factory airbox lid, prior to recording the first "baseline" dyno pulls. However according to Dale, fitment of the lid was a real pain in the arse (which required removal of the entire airbox from the vehicle), as such I opted to run with it installed. Afterall the stock airbox provides no restriction of the inlet air path, when running factory boost levels. The factory paper element airbox filter, was replaced with the K&N oiled drop-in filter, as per the Dinan CAI kit. Full details with respect to current vehicle mods, to follow soon. Hehe yeah Benny is the one who found Peter Hopkins at Advan Performance. In fact Ben knows a lot of useful people in the car game.

OK, as mentioned the vehicle is a Sapphire black, E82 135i.
It was a September build of 2009, as such it's equipped with a N54 engine and has the 6 speed manual transmission. I took delivery of the vehicle in November and have since clocked up a little over 18,000 kms. I had kept it totally stock, up to and including the 15,000 km inspection at the "stealership". Following that I figured it was about time I unleashed the true potential, of the venerable N54 power plant, haha. Current installed mods are as follows: - ER charge pipe with Synapse Synchronic BOV & 2 x meth bungs. - Stett Performance stage 2 oil cooler kit with 82 degrees Celsius thermostat option. - Macht Schnell intake charge scoops. - Dinan carbon fiber cold air intake, with replacement K&N oiled panel filter for factory airbox. - BMW Performance 338 mm Drilled & Slotted rotors (Front only). - Hawk High Peformance Street compound brake pads (Front & Rear). - Goodridge-G-stop Stainless Steel brake line kit. - Coolingmist Meth Kit with 2.7 gal integrated tank with low level switch, flow sensor, 2 x CM7 injectors. - Coolingmist CMGS Progressive Meth Controller in 52 mm Silver bezel, Blue display gauge. - ATI - ePod Steering Wheel Gauge Pod. - VMR 710's (Gunmetal) 19 x 8.5 & 19 x 9.5, with Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 tyres, 225/35R19 & 255/30R19. - PROcede N54 Professional Version 5 (PnP), with latest Beta 3-30 DIC maps. With regards lubricants and fluids, the crankcase is now filled with MOTUL 300V Power Racing 5W30 engine oil. The most recent oil and filter change was done at 16,770 km. I had previously used Castrol EDGE Sport 5W30. The first oil and filter change was at 1,500 km. The second was at a little over 5,000 km and the last oil change with the Castrol EDGE was at 11,141 km. The transmission oil was replaced with Redline D4 ATF at around 11,500 km. The brake master cylinder now has a Penrite DOT 4 or SUPER DOT 4 brake fluid. Not too sure on the above, I will have to check with Dale. All other lubricants and fluids, are currently the factory fill. As promised here is a dyno graph of the vehicle, following the installation of Adrian's magical little box, more commonly known as the Vishnu PROcede "tune". N.B. With regards the quality of the "workmanship and honesty of Peter and his guys", I COULD NOT, agree more! Thus far Advan Performance and in particular Dale, who has done all the spanner work on the car, have been very professional. I will provide details on the dyno pulls soon. |

You too Justin, it's interesting. Your car made slightly more power stock for stock (could be due to temps on each day etc) but it makes 250kw at the wheels with no dump pipes or exhaust?
Kenny can probably correct me, but it looks as though the factory exhaust must be an alright jigger from the factory as his car made another 9-10kw with the aftermarket exhaust. Are you running the factory intercooler? |

Are you sure the 2nd dyno was without the use of meth?? Are there any other mods I'm missing... downpipes, FMIC? This means you gained 60rwkw from just: Procede Dinan CAI ER Charge Pipe + Synapse BOV I think the intake and charge pipe would provide very minimal gains... I don't know, it doesn't seem to add up according to everything else I've seen. |

Kenny, I hope you're reading this... time to get an intake and jump back on the dyno and crack the 300kw!
I am fan of the Dinan intake, I think it's a great design (love the carbon bling too) but not a fan of the price. Good to know there is enough clearance to run the Dinan CAI with the ER Charge Pipe + Synapse BOV, I always wanted to know that. Subscribed for more updates |

Yes I think it's interesting too. It is the same dyno machine but the guts were fried n a recent electrical storm and the computer hardware was replaced, not sure if that has changed anything.
The baseline runs are very close but the PROcede only dyno shows a noticeable difference. You'll never convince me of a Dinan intake :-)

What's even more interesting is Justin's baseline dyno had the Dinan CAI on at the time. I'm wondering if the Procede brought out the power of the CAI running higher levels of boost. |

It's worth noting, that the combination of the heavier 19" wheels and the increased rolling diameter, would have cost some power. Peter suggested that my wheel and tyre combo could cost 5 rwkw, over the lighter and smaller rolling diameter, of the factory 18" wheels. Of course the strap tension with which the vehicle is tied down, would probably have a larger impact. To ensure consistant and accurate readings, I made a point of asking Peter to tie down the vehicle firmly, as he would any other car. IMHO the factory catback exhaust is quite reasonable. Quality aftermarket catless downpipes, "should" result in bigger horsepower gains over that of any catback exhaust, available on the market. I shall be putting my theory to the test, soon. FYI, my intercooler is stock. However I have a HPF intercooler to install, later in the build. |

At the time of the PROcede install, Dale was on sick leave and had yet to finalize the installation of the Meth kit. I hope to have that done this week. There is very little to be gained "power" wise, from the use of an aftermarket charge pipe and BOV. Unless of course the stock diverter valves and pipe fittings are bleeding boost (above factory levels). FYI Gents, the 233 rwkw pull was the 1st recorded run with the PROcede set to Map 1, with a boost target of 12 psi, at my request. The 2nd run on Map 1, resulted in 231 rwkw. After a good 10 minute cool down of the vehicle we did another pull, but this time on Map 2, whilst retaining the default boost target of 14.5 psi. The result was 250.3 rwkw. The 2nd run on Map 2, resulted in 248 rwkw. Finally Adrian wanted to perform a run on the Valet map. This was essentially on factory boost levels, which resulted in 183 rwkw. The 2nd run on the Valet map, saw power drop by a further 5 rwkw, obviously the inlet air path was becoming badly heat soaked. It is worth noting, whilst Map 2 had a boost target of 14.5 psi, peak power was made at a reading of 15 psi. Map 1 and the Valet map recorded 12 psi & 7.5 psi respectively, which was bang on target. All the runs were made on 98 RON, Shell V-Power fuel. The dyno cell ambient temp was around 26 degrees Celsius. Good info!
As Kenny mentioned its really good you are both able to document mods on the same model vehicle on the same dyno. It'll give budding modder's a good idea of the gains from different components. I think you'll really be impressed with the meth installed, they go very hard with it running. Kenny's really impressed me when I took it for a strap. |
