Heatsoak at the track...

was at the track today...ambient temps were in the upper 90s.
Towards the later part of the session, engine temps got close to 3/4, i'd guess maybe 280 degrees...car didnt go into limp mode, but i noticed it didnt pull as hard as the early part of the session, i assume this is heatsoak?
I was in 3rd and 4th only, revving upto 6500rpms at certain parts of the track.

will the intercooler help with the heatsoak?

PFC01 brake pads were awesome, no brake fade at all.

thanks
Franklin

The intercooler uses outside air so there are limits to what it can do. More airflow through the engine and intercooler would be a better solution but then again, if the outside air is 90 degrees, there is only so much you can do. Subaru has an awesomely simple solution for heatsoak. They carry a water tank that runs to a pump and sprays water ON the intercooler to quickly bring the core temperature down. If you track the car, you should consider increasing the airflow over the intercooler but cutting trim plastic out of the way as much as possible, then adding some venting to exhaust the extra airflow, then finally get a windshield washer tank with pump and a switch of some sort that will spray a bit of water on the intercooler when temp is high. Just a thought!

Any car will have heat soak but turbos are a little more susceptible because air temperature rises when air is compressed.

Good luck.

Go faster & use brakes less = more airflow = no heat soak

But seriously, that's a bummer. Did you keep lap times or data? Not to make excuses but could you have been getting used to the power? As with any fast machine your brain/body sync up with the acceleration and it suddenly doesn't feel as fast. I just got out of a 315 hp Exige S and although it was very fast, after 45 minutes it didn't seem as fast as when I first got in. 0-60 in 3.8!

Glad you like the brake pads! If not, I would have felt responsible.
Now it's your turn to buy that Active Autowerks intercooler, first.

maybe i did get used to the power. Unfortunately no lap times/data. I'm looking into getting harry's lap timer for my next event.

I thought you were trying the AA intercooler in August?

No, it's your turn to try something first. Suspension next week so I'm not doing anything else for a while.

It was 100 here in DFW. If heatsoak happens at 100 degree temps on the track I'm not gonna complain. the PFC-01 pads are phenomenal. Best pad I have ever used on my e30 m3.
Nothing to report suspension wise?

problem is, we have a couple more months of 100 degree weather...sigh!

Suspension will go in next week. Really hope it will cure the lean and dive.
After that, will have to figure out what the next mod is...wheels/tires or tune or midpipe or IC. I noticed when behind M3s with exhaust, i couldnt hear my car (i tend to drive by sound) so i want something louder.

'snowfro' was there and he timed me at 1 sec quicker than i was in my racecar (i was slow in it though and learning the track), and i'm probably missing 3-5 sec on the table.
Will find out hopefully this weekend what the Pro racer will run in my car.

This summer has been wicked, you are right, but it's been almost a decade since it's been this hot, this long. Remember the LSC DE days in august at 105 degrees?

Are you on track again today?

Pro racer?

I'm dying to drive the 1m with a set of R tires.

An intercooler would help a lot. By getting more airflow into the engine, no matter what the ambient temp as long as it's lower than your engine temp, it will be beneficial to the performance of the car. 90 degrees ambient temp vs 60 degrees is not such a big difference when your engine is running at 280 degrees! Also, actually cooling the air coming in through the use of the water spray, or more efficiently, methanol spray using a meth kit, will significantly allow your turbos to run cooler and more efficiently.

A Helix intercooler will be my first significant modification. Hoping to install it in next couple of weeks.

Yes. Planning to go up to their shop in Philly and expect that they'll document their first install in a 1M.

I wonder if there's any way to fabricate something like this, or does anyone make such a thing? I agree, Subaru really did it right when they came up with this. Unfortunately it's missing from the newer models. I was also thinking about fabricating some bake ducts as well using these instructions: HERE
My car will be tracked, so both of these mods will be necessary.

Although I don't recommend it, I've run straight distilled water with water wetter for the N54 with decent results.

I've felt the timing being pulled during high temp runs.

Good point, if you do this, use distilled water to prevent calcium buildup.

I finally experienced some heatsoak as well the other day. However, it was 102 degrees here lol. In that circumstance its allowed in my book.
