Is the shark fin for the SatNav or the cell phone?

Just wondering if my car will have one - I'm getting the SatNav, but not the phone...

The Fin is for a lot of things I think. Bluetooth is definitely one. THe other is for BMW Assist. THe fin sends out info. and BMW CEnter uses it to track your car. I dont think it matters whether you got the phone or not. Im not sure about other countries but here in the US every E90 has a fin.

Oh, right. It's an option in Europe depending on what electronics you have in the car. I won't have either the phone or BMW Assist (not sure that's even available here).

The shark find is for the Nav...maybe the radio too, but I'm not sure. The cell phone can use the shark fin, but you need the cell phone adapter accessory for that to work.

The fin is not used for bluetooth. Bluetooth is not transmitted from outside the vehicle. This poster is correct that it is used for a number of things. These things include normal radio antenna, antenna for Sirius satellite radio, GPS transmitter for navigation, and powered antenna for BMW Assist communication and docked (OEM adaptor necessary) cell phone.

I see. Looks as if I will most likely be getting the fin then. Pity, I would have preferred a more discreet (i.e. invisible) antenna... Thanks for your answers, anyway

Yes, your car will have it

Its for navigation, external phone antenna fpr phone cradle and Sattelite radio in the USA

Its not for the nomal radio, that runs through the rear windscreen

Actually, Bluetooth is definitely NOT one.

It is used for BMW Assist, sat. radio, and provides an external aerial for mobile telephony.

What do you think I meant?? LOL BMW doesnt recommend using your phone without and external antenna due to radiation. I just said bluetooth because it has to do with the cell phones. But I guess your answer is more specific.

Have a question... Does the Bluetooth Technology for the phone will still work without the BMW Assists subscription?

Yes Bluetooth has nothing to do with the Assist option subscription, Assist is free for the first year in the US. The BT will work regardless of Assist/Subscription. It is just the way they chose to package crap, typical BMWNA, put something most people would want (BT) with something most would not (Assist) and then package them together and make money off of both..... got to love it
Best of luck!

out of all the other brands antenna/fins, i think we have the best looking one. the honda/acura has a stupid square button at the top, audi sort of look like ours but too skinny. e90 has perfect size, shape and design, not to mention it really looks like a shark fin from behind. it just adds to the mean growl from frontal view, particularly the headlights with hamann eyelids and angle eyes.

I'm jealous of where you live

BTW, once my car has been broken in properly, I will be getting the ECU remapped in the UK. I should see about 580Nm (430 lb/ft)

Thanks for the info Mapezzul. My free subscription will be over this coming July. I am not getting the subscription though, can't think of the use of it. As long as my BT works then I would be fine...
