Friend? Are you sure? Friends don't let friends buy a 3 series when they can have the 1.

I agree, like early hip hop....the 318ti was ahead of its time... I couldn't imagine with todays world tempo, gas prices and such, why a 318ti wouldn't find a spot in the market.... but why--we have the 1 As mentioned previously, at the end of the day, to each his own.... almost everyone on this forum shares the belief that the 1 series is a superbly built piece of German engineering and that BMW struck that balance we 3 and 5 series buyers were looking for. Look how many people on the forums spoke of going in to buy a 3 or 5, getting a chance to drive the 1 and then bought it... Am I going to lie and say price doesn't influence the decision? Of Course not...that would be dumb....the rich stay rich by not spending... From another post, it seems this site is made up of more middle, middle upper income people than high or low... So lets for arguments sake break the points down - The base price of the 128i is 28K give or take.... almost $4K less than a 325.... In a 128 you are getting an inline six with 230HP compared with what? http://www.cars.com/go/crp/research....=&aff=national Good read about what the competition is...350z, I mean c'mon I had the c230K coupe....compared to this, the c class was less responsive than my work car which is a VW rabbit.... The argument that this is an entry level car and any joe schmoe can get it? Lets raise our hands to how many 1's we see on the road.. I live right near Scottsdale, AZ and I see more Lambos and Bently's than I do 1's There are only 24 for sale in the entire Valley here....(Granted this is a new car and there might be tons of 1's ordered and in production) I am referring to the spec'ed out ones on the lot ready to go.... Folks, This all comes back to money...money money money If this car was priced at $33K MSRP Base for the 128i and the 3 got a price bump... For some on the forums the car would become out of reach and still every 3,5,7 and pontiac owner would be hating on it... I am enjoying this thread alot hearing everyone's take on it and hope we keep going but we are going back and forth about the options on the car and not the real reason this is a hit in the making... THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE STRIPPED DOWN AND REFINED FOR UNDER $30K WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL OUR DOLLAR STINKS....OTHERWISE WITHOUT THE INFLATION AND HAD THE EURO BEEN WEAKER WE WOULD HAVE SEEN A $30-$31K MSRP BASE I do have one worry... and we can focus on this.... what if the 1 series takes off hard, BMW starts seeing the margins slim and decides to build the 1 in SC from now on along the X and Z? think about it.... Europe has the Diesel 1's and different body styles and unless BMW brings the hatch over to the states and if our dollar keeps sinking(which I don't think it will) They might decide for the sake of costs to build them here since we are the only ones getting the coupe body Just my Two Cents... I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!! |

As for the topic at hand.. I could have bought a 3 series, but the 135i was smaller, faster and better looking. Being less expensive was a bonus not a requirement. Dan |

This guy pulled up next to my car in a parking lot. He got out of his 5 series, and walked all around my car, staring at it wide-eyed, wondering what it was, and who's it was, etc.
He had a fit over it!! Of course, who can blame him? I just had the windows tinted and the car professionally washed and waxed, and you KNOW it looked a hell of a lot better than his boring paw paw 5 series. Moo hoo ha, moo ho, ha ha......... |

Bottom Line: the 135i is an expensive 1 series ...no matter which way you look at it...it is a 1 series and will always be a 1 series...
Any other BMW series will always have more *perceived* class, luxury and performance (esp for the unaquainted) than the 1. BUT who cares? You buy the car because it is what you like. On a side note, it is good not everyone likes the 1 coupe because if they did then everyone would have one. |

That figure is closer to $30k in OZ. But yeah, the 135 isn't a cheap car in anyones language over here, but it's still an absolute bargain

The difference is closer to $50K in Australia between the 135i and 335i once you consider on road costs and Luxury Car tax. Sure I like the 3 series coupe however I agree the 135i is a bargain.

People that use a BMW to go from point A to point B, tend to look down on it.
People who actually DRIVE their BMW, tend to like it. People who like it a lot tend to have raced e36 or e30 M3s. |

As I said before, I could easily afford a 335i. It is though to big. Some of us are actually buying a 1 because we like smaller and more nimble cars. Go figure.

I own a BMW, I love it!
My friends that own BMW's, love it. But I don't think any of us are over 30... Who cares what they think, buy and drive what you want...

I briefly considered a 335 when I found out what my lease payments on the 135 were going to be. The 335 was $4k more but $20 less a month.
But for me, the 1 series makes the 3 series a pointless car. If you want a driver's car get the 1, if you want a larger more luxurious car, get the 5 series.

One of the best things about the 135 for me are the misconceptions about the car. I'd prefer that non-BMW enthusiasts think the 1 is a inexpensive entry level car, than apply the other misconceptions about BMWs --snobby elitist a$$holemobiles--to me. It's not that I care what they think; I just don't want my car keyed by a hater.

I'm somewhat surprised that even though the rest of the 1 series isn't yet available in the U.S., there is still quite a range of BMWs available here. So for those of us who choose to have more than one BMW, it seems pointless to praise one at the expense of the other. Tom |

I have had similar experiences at my office parking lot and love it every time! I love it when I catch a guy really going to town on a stare job and then they act like they weren't really trying to look that hard after being surprised by me walking up. |
