Dinged an alloy - refurb?

Anybody had any experience of companies that refurb alloy wheels? Misjudged a corner the other day, and touched the kerb with the rear nearside. Gave me a bit of a scare, as the rear end kicked out, and DTC had to do it's stuff.

Anyway, now got a nice nick out of the alloy (261M). Quite a chunk - very noticeable. My car is a lease one from work, which will be swapped out in a few months, but wondered about getting it tidied up before I hand it back.

Also tarting up our Golf Cab at the moment, and considering getting the BBS cross spokes on that done also.

Any experiences (good or bad?) Recommendations in the South East?

I scratched an alloy (ns front) wasn't that bad but the only way to get a perfect finish was to buy a new wheel from BMW - cost £270.

mad chemist - did you look into refurb at all? From what I've seen today, may have been an option.

Looked into it a bit more.

After a service, local BMW dealer always leave a leaflet in the car about alloy refurbs, so took a trip out. Bloke in a van is there twice a week, £65 per repair.

Just across the road was a dedicated alloy refurb place, so went for a chat. Pretty impressed, guy certainly knows his stuff. Place was crammed with all sorts of alloys. BMW/Merc/Lexus, classic car stuff, motorbike wheels.

He knew who made the wheel, the paint manufacturer, how many layers of powder coat underneath etc etc. Can do a localised repair for £35, or full strip and refinish for £55. Local repair would be 90% OK (says you'd see it if you looked close enough). Insists you wouldn't be able to tell the difference from new with the refinish. Showed me a lovely 19" rim off an M5 that was the same paint as mine. Looked brand new to me.

He also knows the bloke who does the repairs at the BMW dealer, says he charges them £30, so they're taking over 100% profit on that.

Anyway, booked it in for next week. Be interesting to see how it turns out.

Jamze,

Glad you found someone to take care on the alloy. Just for the record BMW told me mine was too bad to repair. Also, on a similar note, I tried in vain to get BMW to repair a very small scratch on my old E46 M3 rear wheel. They kept saying that they can't do these sorts of wheels. Go figure. Also, the mark-up you spoke of is pretty typical for the main dealers.

Let me know how you get on when you've had the repair done.

Mad.

Thanks Mad. They've got the car for the day on Tues. I'll let you know how I get on.

Jamze,

Very nice,

Don't think I can see any imperfections at all.

Have a good Christmas and watch those alloys in the snow and ice!!

Thanks Mad. Have a good xmas and New Year too.

Yep, alloy looks spot on. Would recommend these guys to anybody. Only question now is how durable the finish is.

Did suddenly think it would be more sensible to get it done after the bad weather, but want to crack on with doing up the Golf over the winter. Will get them to refurb the alloys on that now.

Sure. It was Wicked Wheels (franchise?) in Guildford. Kevin or James on 01483 302227. Dropped the car off first thing, and was ready just after lunch.

If it's just the one, they said even a full strip/refinish would be done in a day.

Seem very accommodating. Our Golf will be all four wheels, and they offered to loan me a set of spare wheels while they did mine over a couple of days.

One happy customer here.

Thats good to know as I need to get mine sorted at some point after clipping a hidden island in Ripley last month! That repair job looks cracking too! How much did they charge for the wheel and was this just a local repair - i.e deflate tyre and do the damaged area only?

What are you having done to the Golf? Do you make it down to any of the monthly VW meets at Ladymead?

Sorry about all the questions btw!

Just a local repair, cost £35. Yes, wheel off car, push tyre away from rim. Rub back to good alloy, fill, undercoats, top coat, lacquer. They've achieved a v. good match. Can't see the repair at all.

Golf has got BBS split rim cross spokes on it. The polished rims always go on those, so they've recommended taking them apart, stripping and refinishing. Other than being lowered slightly, it's a stock mk3 2 litre cab. I'm a bit old now for Ladymead!

Just picked up a lovely nick 2 litre MX5 as our second car, so will tidy up the Golf this winter and prob sell it next year.

Cool! At that price I'll be heading down there sooner rather than later! Your Golf sounds interesting - let me know if/when you get it advertised! We had a mk1/2 Golf Rivage a few years ago and I've been hankering after another Golf cab ever since!

Looks OK, doesn't it? Haven't cleaned the car for ages, as the weather has been so crap, but will have a really close look when I next clean them.

Dub, direct message me an email address if you want, and the next time the Golf is clean I'll take a pic and send it over.

Just to complete the story, got those BBS alloys done by the same place. Look absolutely mint. Well pleased.

Hi Jamze, sorry I missed your last post!

Golf looks cracking! Very clean and the wheels really do complete the look.

I still haven't got round to taking my wheels in for repair but am planning to get it done next month. Will post pics once done...

Not bad for an eleven year old daily driver, eh? Other than a good clean and the wheels, done nothing else, so still a few parking dinks and scrapes. Not sure if it's worth sorting those, got to leave something for the new owner to do!

Got quite into it and cleaned all of the cars over the weekend. They now look very patriotic lined up together - red, white and blue.

Good job getting the wheel fixed and a nice price.

If I were you I would also get your alignment checked.

Yeah, managed to swing a 4-wheel alignment at the last service - told the lease company it was all the pot holes.

Golf Cab has just sold to the first person who saw it
