New Mod: Suspension or perf mod?
Hey everyone,
I have had my 135 for about 8 months now and have loved every second of it. I had the BMW perf exhaust installed over the summer and have decided to buy myself an early christmas present. I cannot decide whether to install new suspension (was thinking BMW perf suspension) or a couple power mods (jb+, intake)? I know there have been a number of similar threads but was curious if anyone had any advice, opinions etc on what is the best next mod would be? Also on a side note, I was in Dallas for the week and stopped by Classic BMW in Plano today for the Cars and Coffee event that is held monthly. Was a great morning with a ton of amazing cars. Only saw one 1 but was a sick white 135. Will hopefully be back in late Decemeber and would love to add to the number of 1's at the show!!! Thanks |

The desicion will be influenced by the roads you drive. I live in Florida where twisties ate called off ramps (lol). Having said that I just installed a JB+ and absolutely love it. I did a post "best bang for the buck" that being a used JB+ from Terry for 175 bucks w/ warranty. Presently at default setting but oil change soon atfter which will try 100%.
The tune is perfect - smooth, no ruff spots and just what the daily driver wants. I know there is more available (JB3) for those seeking higher limits but the JB+ is the daily driver / enthusiat tune. I would drop Terry a note and get in line for a used one, pass on the intake and start researching your next mod.

The first step should be the JB3 system. This is an easy and affordable upgrade that will completely transform the car. From there, I suggest a spring/shock or coilover upgrade and swapping out those RFTs.

Thanks guys for the input. I think I'm going to go for the JB3 now, as after doing some research it seems like a lot of people upgraded after initially purchasing the JB+. I'm still may also spring for the Injen Intake, I realize that the power gains might be marginal, however I'm a sucker for that sound.....

If you are going the intake route, look into the aFe Dual Cone Intake. I have it on my 135 and on our 335 project car and have been real happy with the performance and sound.

Instead of an intake, I would consider an upgraded oil cooler and/or intercooler if you're really going to be pushing that JB3. But instead of all that, I'd actually upgrade the suspension and put some non rft on first, assuming you're doing more than a lot of straight line driving. You'll probably want some wider, stickier tires if you go for peak performance anyway, so might as well get those out of the way.

My first 'performance' mod was getting rid of RFTs, then came the JB3. Doing an exhaust next (catless mid + axel back), then for sure addressing suspension as this is the weakest part of the car IMO...

I'm going BMW PS. Evan at Tischer BMW is selling it for $895 + $88/spring w/ free shipping right now. Can't beat that deal when it comes to BMW PS. Plus it doesn't give the dealer any excuses to use if something on the chassis needs work.

Have you been following Evo Magazine's review of their 135i? They have it under their long term fleet, and just installed the BMW PS. Interestingly enough, their lap times were down, which is stunning. They did like it for everyday use though.

I also say do suspension first, and power later. Too much power can be a dangerous thing, but you can never have too much control (that plus the 1's key weaknesses center more on its handling/suspension - e.g. body roll, understeer - than on its power).
I too plan on going the BMW PS route, since I'll be using my 1 as a daily driver with only a few autocrosses a year. |
