Thanks... but I've checked the previous threads about insurance and I still think that I'm very very over charged...
My insurance company is AIG and I'm an international student without social security number. I live in Newport Jewsey City and have public parking garage which I pay $170 a month to park my car. I usually drive to school every day about 5miles. Most importantly I'm 26 yrs old. So can you give me some ideas why I'm paying so much insurance? thanks~ |

But should we also state what the coverage is? If I say I paid $600 for 6 month, and some one say they paid $700 for 6 month, you cannot just compare the $. It depends on the coverage you opted for as well.

New Jersey is notorious for extremely high auto insurance rates.
Overall it is very difficult to compare policies -- it's not just your record and where you live, but also, your policy. For example, I have much more than the minumum on liability but keep a very high deductible. On the theory that insurance is to cover real disasters (the kind that get you sued for everything you own), not dumb stuff like the windshield cracked. My policy is $1,800/year but it includes my wife's car, too. I suspect that, as a student, you are in whatever NJ calls the 'assigned risk' pool which is considered the highest risk and some companies won't even write a policy for you. When I was in my 20's and had an accident and a speeding ticket, I was in that class. It's a number of years ago but I was paying $1600/year for a car that probably cost me $5,000. The only way to lower your rate once you're in an assigned risk pool is to stay out of trouble and wait a few years. Then, when you shop around, you are more likely to find a company that will give you a competitive rate. |

I would guess that your rate is about normal for Jersey City. Two years ago I got a quote for $3600/yr for a 1997 Acura Integra in Brooklyn, NY. Ultimately, I got liability only (for $1800/yr).
The NJ/NYC area has notoriously high insurance rates, even if you have a clean driving record. Michael
