Crashed my car into a tree log on a curvy road! --- pictures 56K BEWARE
I've had the car for just over a month and today I guess destiny struck. Just 45 minutes ago I was doing no more than 35MPH when I was going into a one lane (and a half lane --- on of those very narrow two lane roads) 90 degree turn. As usual, got into the turn and DTC kicked in. Yet it didn't work its magic fast enough. I got closer and closer to going off the road and it wasn't until less than a second before that I knew this was it and there was probably going to be some serious damage. So my car slid of the road into the dirt (no curb and no trees around) and then just as it was straighting out I heard a sound I hope I never have to hear again. It was the worst crunching and scraping sound I've ever heard. It was then that I knew I wrecked. I was sort of in shock because I've never had an accident before and couldn't believe what just happened.
Because it was dark and I couldn't see the damage but I knew it was there. I was hoping that it wasn't as bad as it sounded. So I turned around and headed for home, which was only 2 minutes away. Once there I grabed a flash light and took a look. It's not as bad as it could have been but my stomach began to churn and in fact still in. I'm guessing I've got at least $1,000 worth of damage if I'm lucky and hopefully not more than $2,000. This is how I invision it: $150 to get the wheels fixed (I already know a guy and I know that's what the price will be) $280.99 + $20 labor for a new PS2 rear tire (not sure if I need this?) $400 - $600? for the running board replacement $350 - $500 for the door(s?) to be fixed (I think it's just the front door that got hit but I won't be able to tell for sure until I get my car washed) What do you guys think? This sound about right or am I totally off and this is going to be more like $4K? Also, note the rear tire. Its got a piece that is sort of chipped off. Like it's still on there but it folds back. It's not that thick to where it goes through, but it's a good chunk. I'm thinking the tire will need to be replaced. Do you guys think so? I'm trying to have not such a bad additude about it considering what just happened. It's also entirely my fault (and maybe a little bit of the car's ) Live and learn I suppose. UPDATE: This is how my costs break down: $315 for the Rocker Side Molding - Painted and Installed - including Full Inspection $25 for Undercarriage Plastic Jack Piece - Including Install $344 for the PS2 Rear Tire, Installation and New Alignment (Installation and Tire paid for by my Road Hazard Tire Coverage) $150 for the Refinishing of Both Right Side Wheels $150 for the Bottom of the Door to be Fixed and Repainted Total Accident Cost - $984 + 7 days time Total Cost Out-of-Pocket - $660 The process will begin on Monday with the new PS2 rear tire being installed along with a new alignment being done. Then on Tuesday I'll get the front and rear right side wheels fixed. Also on Tuesday (could be Wednesday) I'll pick up the Rocker Side Molding from Ferman BMW and take it 6 miles up the road to the BMW Body Shop. Two days later (Thursday or Friday) they're suppose to have it painted and ready to be installed and will remove the old Rocker Side Molding and put on the new one as well as the new plastic jack piece underneath. As soon as that's done I'll take it over to my guy to fix the door that day and I'll have the car the next day. So everything goes as planned and my baby will be back to her former glory by lunch time on June 24th 2006. One week and two days from the time I wrecked. Not too shaby, especially with the price I'm getting everything done for. Last edited by bmwexecutive; 06-17-2006 at 02:59 AM.. |

Although I only did the 2-hour school that comes with delivery so I'm thinking I'll go back and do the 2-day school. And I know they can't defy physics, but it just seemed odd to me that it happened because I take turns at 35MPH all day long and never slide like that. It had to be sand on the road or something. I can't think of anything else that would have made that happen. Sand does make sense though because the Range Rover dealership takes their potential customers test driving back there in the dirt all the time. Just wish I would have see it. Might have if it were daytime. Oh well. At least from this I've learned never to take turns that fast in an area like that again. Looking on the bright side I see it as this being something that was bound to happen with the way I was taking corners. At least it wasn't as bad as it could of been and now this has gotten me to see that I shouldn't be taking corners that fast no matter what. I'll still take corners at 35MPH or faster, but ONLY when I've got more than a lane and a half that I'm turning into. And I won't be driving like that at night anymore, that's for sure. |

You forgot new alignment. I'd also check for frame and suspension damage to be on the safe side.
Really need to look at the wheels/tires carefully.... Good luck and drive safely!

doesnt look too bad...maybe a new side-skirt would do the trick...you can prolly re-finish the wheels for around $100 a piece and the plastic piece for the jack can be purchased for i think around $4.. as realoem.com says...the door doesnt look to be damaged at all...maybe its the dark pics but i cant see for sure

oh shit man, that sucks but it could have been a lot worse. hope you get her all fixed up soon.
also, i have to agree with ward's comment about defying rules of physics. sometimes you just know which turn you are/not going to make and you brake before something like this happens. oh well.

I feel badly for you - and am glad you were not injured - but I have to confess, my first thought was (based on your descriptions of how you like to drive down streets at 90 mph) "what took so long".
You do need a new tire and the damage to me looks like it's probably around $4-5000 from what I've seen. Make sure you go to a BMW certified shop - don't fool around. |

You're gonna let your insurance take care of all this, right?

And thanks for the kind words. I'm positive everything will be back to its natural glory, it's just a matter of time. Any idea how long it would take for my BMW dealership to replace the side running board? I have a good idea in regards to time to fix everything else. |

Now...you do realize this has to go to body shop (BMW certified!!!) not a dealer for repair, right? Also, regardless of where the damage is, the car may have to have other sections nearby painted to match so it's feathered in. Any time you give your car in for body work, figure (and this depends on their backlog and how long it takes to get parts) 1 - 3 weeks. Good luck and keep us informed.

As far as 1-3 weeks goes, I'll skip the body shop if that's the case. I know someone who did work on my brother's Audi S4 who I can take it to. He does the work for the Mercedes dealership around here so he is a professional. The tire will be replaced at Tire Kingdom and as far as the wheels go, I know the guy who is BMW Certified to fix BMW wheels. Time breakdown: Front door: 4-6 hours Wheels: 1-2 hours Rear tire: 20-30 minutes Side running board: No data |
