Yea seriously, but the DOT is sooo slow on the uptake, we should be thankful we have replaceable halogen capsule reflector headlights, much less projectors and xenons- I mean sealed headlights were required here until 1986 and in europe they had gone to replaceable halogen capsules in like the late 60s, or early 70s

And many enthusiasts installed superior (if illegal) illumination on their own. (Anyone else here put a Lucas Flame Thrower on his Austin-Healey?) As to substitute headlamps, I embarked on that particular life of crime in England in 1968/9 when I chucked my 2002's sealed beams for Marchal bulbs and reflectors. Back in the States those lights sailed through vehicle inspections in Wisconsin and later in Ohio without so much as a raised eyebrow. I kept swapping in Euro lights till they became legal. I'll bet there are several fellow travelers among the older 1 Addicts.

DuckW - I resemble that remark - I had some highly illegal Cibie lamps on my ol' burpo-charged Mustang - they'd bubble the paint on a garage door from fifteen feet away. ; -)
