Your welcome guys, glad to help

Binstar, correct with the above and as previously mentioned, go to a good tint shop and ask for physical samples of different transfer rates to be placed on alternate windows of your car - and decide from there

You can get something in-between those above and you can also get darker and lighter, or for those looking for something different, you can get different colours/gloss levels too...

There are certain shades of green and blue available and you can get tints which are silver and rainbow coloured, not for most people and some are not legal, but certainly lots of variety there...

The blue tint some places have looks almost the same as the factory blue coloured glass on certain Mercedes models, this tint looks and works extremely well with black cars

Just a 'tail ender' to this thread. I emailed Auto Classic this morning to go ahead with the 'Street Legal' tint and reminded them that they'd given me a $50 discount, meaning it was $645.

I did this purely because of the Comfort Access risk.

They advised me "The price in May when you purchased the car, for Street Legal was $695, the price has gone up at the start of this financial year to $795...", she then offered me a further discount which effectively made it the same as the pre-July RRP.

WTF? $100 increase? I expressed my objection at this in no uncertain terms, but went ahead with the 'double discount'.

The explanation I received back was "We have had to make this increase mainly because of the increase in tax; unfortunately this is beyond our control." - not quite sure what that means, but as per usual, the customer loses.

Bah.

Is this through a dealer Simon, or is Auto Classic a tint shop ??

If it's through the dealer, they're 'riding the LCT wagon' along with what all dealers are doing with everything associated with a new car purchase, until the LCT issue is sorted...

If it's a tint shop that price is steep, even if they're using 'ceramic' and not 'metallised' film for comfort access concerns...

As if the LCT impacts the cost of tinting, that is a money making scam.

Everything you add on when you order seems to be subject to LCT.

Don't be surprised if we're getting scammed somewhere along the line.

It is, which is why you should buy & add on options post sale when possible. Of course this isn't possible with sunroofs etc but good advice with add on bling like factory performance parts.

Exactly, all added options add to the o/a purchase price of the car, the LCT is then calculated on that o/a purchase price...

So the cost of a tint job through the dealer is actually costing more than whatever the original quote was...double wammy and yet another reason (speaking for myself) I'd never get something like a tint job through the dealer !

Yes, this is also correct and some dealers will actually help you and suggest to do so...when I purchased my HSV R8 back in '99 that particular dealer added alot of options I wanted after the car was delivered, which reduced the o/a purchase price considerably

SimonB.

Is the tinting "after-market", or part of your initial purchase invoice.

If you're doing it after paurchase, LCT doesn't apply (obviously).

i am sure you knew that though.

It's not part of my initial, invoiced, purchase. I paid for it seperately. They didn't really want to know about my lengthy discussion by email, so I left it at the price I got it offered for. I'm happy, so I guess that's all that really matter. Thanks for the advice though.

Another tail-ender on a flogged topic; this is my first new car in ages, and the first car I intend tinting (redneck immigrant to Aus, tired of being punished by the sun) I intend tinting via dealer, however am curious as to how much removal of body panels of finishing bits need to be taken off during the process. Yes.... we're all protective of our 1's, but never having had tint, have heard horror stories of panels being removed and not refitted properly etc.

The thought of a 150kg yobbo who hasn't showered in a while lying on my backseat for an hour trying to install rear tint is freaking me out ..... it should be a factory option with one or two reasonable percentages to ensure the majority of RTA/DMV's are happy to compliance it.

Anyone have some comforting advice or facts

Truly? My dealer is justifying the $599 charge (haggled down from $699) because they say only they are trained to remove the panels to install tint whereas tint specialists aren't. I was about to tell them to go ahead before my impending delivery (next week???), but if confirmed I'll throw this back at them.

I am pretty sure they don't. They used to I am sure, but that was 10 years ago. I have recently heard that from a tint person.

I don't know if you throw that to them, they can reply that not taking interior off is an inferior method of doing it.

So I dunno is the answer.

Most interior now is so well make ... I don't understand why you worry about it.

This is a very common sale pitch. I don't believe the door trim is 135 specific or even BMW specific.

Sent to me this morning when I queried;
"The door trims are removed so that the windows are tinted right to the bottom. If the trims aren't removed they can only tint along the edges of top the door and this can be a messy job or the tint could peel back at a later stage. To ensure the job is done professionally we tint it to the bottom of the glass and our BMW technicians are the ones who will be working on your BMW once the windows are tinted."
Could all be bull faeces but I've committed to use them now anyway...

Well you pay extra for security. They will have to fit the bill if the interior is broken (a clip or something).

3 years down the track you will think other way, but I will probably do the same for my new cars. In fact, the last 2 I manage to get them to tint the car for free. Maybe time to try on a BMW dealer when I order my 1.

I paid BMW $195 to tint my windows, and they did them down to the bottom. Looks great I think. I'd tell them to stick the $599 - what a load of bullshit.
