engine loud while accelerating
First time BMW owner (heck, first time non-japanese car owner), so don't laugh.
When I'm accelerating I notice that the engine revs really loud. In my previous car (acura tl) I never really noticed the engine noise while accelerating. Is this normal with the 128i? |

I really don't understand what exactly you're saying. Obviously, you know that an engine gets louder when you accelerate. Is it a strange sound? Does it sound "bad"?

I don't think it sounds bad. It's just loud like deep bass. Like I said i'm thinking it's probably normal with the BMW. I just never noticed it before with japanese cars.

Well, the N52 is more "bassy" than "tingly" like a small displacement 4-cylinder japanese motor.

Marius,
Your 128i should sound loud, deep, throaty, heck, he's supposed to sound downright masculine.:roundel:

Sorry, I edited my post while you were writing this. I didn't look to see what he was driving before I posted. The 135 is N/A until the turbos kick in right? Like I said after the edit, one car manufacturer to the next is just... different.

i actually think the BMW engines are QUIET compared to other 300HP+ engines.
BMWs are meant to be refined and quiet.... have you ever heard a Mustang GT or Corvette or Ferarri accelerate? NOW THATS LOUD. The 135i is quiet compared to any of these.

Compared to other cars I've owned the 128 definately has a throaty rumble accelerating through 1500 to 3000 revs ... if I am somewhere with good sound reflection ... I tend to accelarate slowly with the windows down to savour it !!

you think it sounds good in the 1500-3000 range....try the 4k-5k range with your windows down and driving next to a large building or something that gives some good sound reflection back at you

1500-3000 = Deep Bass/purring/perfect music for driving around town 4k-redline = Angry/Get the F outta my way I can hear the engine better in the Z4 coz the muffler is right under my butt. the 135 I've to roll down the windows and do the golf tee mod to get the same sound level. |

wow a lot of repressed hate in this thread.
To answer the OP's question, yes you hear the engine moreso in BMWs than you did in the Acura TL. The Acura has alot of sound dampening to "mute" the engine noise so its almost not audible but barely audible when you get on it. In a BMW, you hear the engine regardless of if you are cruising are bouncing off the rev limiter.
