Shutting down the engine!

Does anyone hear a transmission or similar rattle when they shut the car off when the car is in neutral, and the clutch is NOT in?

Pushing the clutch in, the noise goes away..

Anyone heard it?

My 325 TI did this too..

What the hell is it?!

I'll have to give this a try .. I usually have my clutch in when I turn the engine off ..

Kris, the manual says to put it either in reverse or 1st when shutting down. That'll stop the rattle.

my g35 made the noise too. i wouldn't be concerned. if you put it in a gear, you're still clutched in when you turn off the enginge - same effect as shutting down in neutral with the clutch in.

reverse idler in the gearbox, nothing to really be concerned about....
an old 3.0 CSL exudes exactly the same wonderful noises!

I always have my car in 1st when shutting it down. it's probably the idler pully for reverse? but also the flapper on the muffler makes a nice clank that people sometimes look at.

has anyone ever noticed the weird ticking if the car is sitting at an idle? I had the car idling for about 10 minutes BS'ing outside my garage and we heard what sounded like a mean valve tap... tapped for 35 seconds, i revved it and it was gone... 5 minutes later, it did it again for 15 seconds.

i'm thinking some sort of pollutions control? any ideas??

some peopel hear the fuel injectors tapping. the noise you gotta watch out for is if you rev it out to 3500 or more and it ticks on the way down. that's wastegate.

this engine seems to have a lot of weird ticking noises. I had a suby before, and have been through the nightmares. I was looking for a more refine sound, maybe i'm just too OCD about this.

I had the same sound in my 07 g35 6mt sedan (R.I.P.) I was told by the infiniti service guys that it was the dual mass flywheel rattling around, which is why it goes away when you engage the clutch before you shutdown.

Kris, I heard this tonight, I idled the car for a minute or so while I had to manually pull down my broken garage door. I reached in thru the window and hit the stop button, there was a clanging noise from under the mid-front of the car as it stopped. Normally i'm in the car when I stop it and usually leave it in gear but tonight i didn't and there was the sound you described. Probably not the coolest sound to finish of a test drive with your mates standing around.

Mine has ticked from day 1. Have 4800 miles on it and the ticking is there at idle. Will bring it up again when I visit the dealer. I think it is an injector.

I find the ticking noise lessens or goes away when I turn off the AC at idle.

The ticking is the direct injection injectors. Lots of pressure in those babies! It is one of the quietest direct injection motors that I have heard. The VW/Audi direct injection motors are very loud...the Mazdaspeed 3 is fairly quiet. I dodn't know about the rattle but I have heard it once or twice myself.

Reply to an old post warning...

I just pulled my car in tonight and let it sit at idle "BSing Around" and it did the same thing. Ticked very loud for 30 seconds or so then stopped. It seemed like a fan might have kicked on or something and that is when it started. Anyone else seen this? I am sure this is NOT normal or by design.

I never heard a ticking noise but I get a metallic rattle when I start the car. Also sounds like a rattle or exhaust leak when I speed up. How quiet are other people's cars?

My car makes a rattling noise when I shut it down like the OP, it does sound bad, almost kind of comical. The noise is not there if it is in gear, clutch pedal depressed, when I shut it down.

ichiban: I agree, this car has all sorts of odd noises entering the cabin that I have not experienced in other cars. It bothered me at first. Now I just embrace the chaos.

Tap tap tap tap tap tap

The tapping was reported to BMW today, after the car has only done 240kms. They said bring it in immediately. They will check it on cold start in the morning. I would say injector for sure, as fuel light is on and 16l/100 has been the average usage since new. ie 240kms on the clock from new and the red light is on! Also taking into account that the scabby dealer probably didnt fuel it up - 16l/100 for a 125i is crap ( a few hard squirts) hows everyone elses fuel? I will report what the dealer finds tomorrow and we will have the answer?
