A Day at Willow Springs (56K beware)

So I went with the speed ventures group today and it was AWESOME, but also very hot. Did a total of 4 runs. 3 Full hardcore runs and 1 shortened one due to the heat (100+F ambient temps).

Today was not only a day of awesomeness but also a day of testing of my current setup. I have a JB3 (currently on map 4) with no other drivetrain modifications and I got NO LIMPS driving full out in the 100+F heat. Each Run had about 9-11 laps depending on your speed and I would choose 2 or 3 to run full out to get some good lap times in while only going 85% on the other laps to keep the oil temps around 250-260F. On the hot laps I would touch 275F real quick. I would have the heat on max blowing out the vent to give the cooling a little extra edge.

Due the the heat the car really wasnt much faster at the top end. However, the extra torque at the low end helped alot on the exits.

After last years fiasco with the RunCraps I decided to upgrade to the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs 225/255. I must say these tires are amazing. AMAZING. For anyone who has been at willow spings knows the the 1 likes to underster at turn 2 and 9 exits, with a small step out sometimes exiting 1. I must say that there was a noticible DECREASE in U-steer on all turns. . I can really get on the gas after the apex and know that I won't U-steer off track.

Okay, enough raving about the JB3 and the Star Specs. Onto the cold hard data:

Last year at the springs (also my first time at a reactrack) my best time was 1:56.6 with average speed of 77mph.

Now, Today's best time with just a JB3 and tires: 1:44.3 with an average speed of 86mph. Thats an increase of 12.3 seconds! I was pretty happy with those times and I could have gone much faster due to me forgetting the breaking patterns and breaking too early. Also, I have a G-tech accelerometer that measures lateral G's and on turn 3 I hit 1.08 Left G's and on turn 9 I hit 1.00 Right G's. Amazing Grip!

There were quite a few slow drivers out there, Including a Ferrari F-430. That's right, I lapped a Ferrari supercar.

Okay, Now onto the picures. There was a professional photagrapher there today and he took some great stills:

Notice the transponder off the tow hook. Its a good gauge of the lateral G's

Looks like you had some fun! How did you do against the M5? Did the brakes ever start to fade during the hot laps? I gotta get out to a track one day

Sounds fun. Btw, what's up with the massive masking tape on the Z? That's a little excessive in my opinion. I bet the Ferrari that you lapped didn't have any tape on the front.

Only a small amount of brake fade at the end of the front straight (130-80) but nothing like some other posters said.

As for the taped up Z, I have no idea why he taped it up that much. I passed him on the next turn and he never caught me.

The Ferrari had no tape on it.

The M5 behind me could only catch me in the straights. But he blew his clutch out after only 1 run. Had to have it towed home .

Thanks for the great post! BSM?

If I were going to the point of using the heater I'd have to turn my lights off the auto setting..lol. Although from my experience neither helps much. As hot as it was I doubt an intercooler and a couple of oil cooler would have helped enough.

The red thing hanging of the bumper is the timing transponder.

As for the lights I don't think that the halos turn off when off the auto setting. I don't think that puts an extra load on the engine either. The FMIC was useless as the track temp (and the air right above it) was about 160F.

I do know for a fact that putting the heater on full blast helps. Last year with it on the oil was 10F cooler than with it off.

Looks like fun! We did a 1:34.2 on street tires (the same Dunlops as you, actually!)

Keep it up man. You will get faster next time... Big Willow takes some time to get used to.

So would you recommend an aftermarket intercooler? Or you think its the juicebox that's responsible for the extra heat? I had a couple redline yesterday onto a freeway and my oil temp is at 250.

I would recommend a complete aftermarket cooling system for the N54 if you plan on tracking the car in that heat. Since I am a college student and the 1 is in PA for the winter, I can't race when the temperatures are cool in the desert.

J tyler, the temps were reaching 270F and still no limps. And next winter after I graduate (2010 winter) I'll beak 1:40:00. No doubt about.

nice pics, I am impressed that a chipped (flashed or piggied or whatever) could hold up to a desert track day. That's the biggest reason i haven't flashed mine, on the street its fine, but I worry about the track. At cal speedway, i don't think i went over 240-250 all day (similar high speed track).

Anyway good work!
