Software Update =S
Today I called my Dealer (Pacific BMW) to check for the Software Updates. I wanted a loan car so my appointed is due on nov 2. They said that it'll take around 2-3 Days just for the update! =S?! does it really take that long? What does the update do anyway?

I don't know why they need 2 to 3 days. Mine took only 4 hours, but it wasn't worth the wait. All I got was the auto lock.

Yeah, they told me a whole day but it took about 4 hours. I don't see why it would take 2-3 days!

I just had my E90 software upgraded: daytime running lights, automatic locks and remote seat memory. It took about 5 hours, but I was provided a loaner (exactly like my 325 i). They did seem to mess-up one of the automatic window controls while doing the update.

Be thankful they're telling you it'll only take two days... my SA told me it was going to be a few months - non I-Drive cars that want Automatic locks & Blinky Clown Nose alarm light have to wait... and since my car was built in May... and they're working backwards from September (apparently at August now..) ...well, it's gonna be a while.

Believe it!
I posted in another thread that my car is sitting in the VPC for a "campaign " issue (CA thinks it is software related). My car was finished being built on Sept 15th and they are already doing another software update on it?! Not exactly a confidence building event, especially after I confirmed manual equipped cars have already been released. It appears the update does take days.

Update takes 4 to 8 hours if everything goes right ( time also depends on what version you had before )
But if one module doesn load properly it can take another 8 hours, hence why they warn you beforehand that it could take more than a day |

Mine took 4 hours, but i still think not worth the time. All I got was auto-door lock at 5MPH.

I don't understand why the software takes so long to load. Do they use a very slow data connection to the vechicle's computer system or something? You would think that this would cause throughput problems at dealerships and BMW would have installed a better solution.
In total it wouldn't be much data they are loading onto the car less than several gigabytes. Does anyone know the answer to this?

The update will be running on Windows 98 with a 335MHz processor, rumored to have twin turbos... I'm upgrading to Mac's OSX Tiger with a dual G5 2.5GHz and it's gonna screw up the entire BMW update. My Auto locking doors will be 3mph instead of 5mph and my clown nose will be blinking twice as fast. |

E90fleet - do you have the scoop on the US updates? My June E90 (May build) is scheduled for the update in a couple weeks. I had a long conversation with service about it, and it appears that we still don't get much from it. They can program the auto-locking, DRL, etc. - I asked about the remote seat/mirror memory and he wasn't sure. But THEY have to program it, so it's not being added to the on board menu.
WTF? This is a software update right? I could build half a data center out of popcicle sticks and gum wrappers in the amount of time it takes them to do a "software update", which by the way doesn't seem like much of an update. I think the way BMW is treating the early adopters sucks. Imagine if everyone waited six months or a year before buying the E90 so they could actually have all the features instead of the promises of "later you'll be able to...". BMW would go bankrupt. They should be worshiping at our feet for buying early and take care of it!!

I agree about the early adopters. I am most annoyed about them not including proper iPod support when they had it in the E46. Sounds like they had to rush the final release of the car to market before they had properly finished the engineering and software construction and you poor suckers coped the result of it.

It doesnt make sense why the dealer is not allowing certain cars to get the update (paullo)? I called the dealer when I saw one of the first threads on here & didnt receive any flack. Was told to come in Monday morning (I think I called on a Thursday or Friday) and wait while they do it. I too have a non-Idrive car. Maybe took 1 hr.
I have DRL & autolock now (no blinking clown nose tho). |

This update is pretty large(country and model specific ) if you look at the list posted by a fellow member from here in South Africa showing all the control units updated in his car. Later updates may only change a few control units and take less than 1 hour |

It doesn't seem like the update is worth my time. My car seems to already have the key memory and I can make most of the adjustments via iDrive (auto door locks, audible alarm, etc).
I'd wait 4 hours for mp3 capability with iDrive, though. Michael
