Wheels Handling Olympics

Just received the latest copy of Wheels Mag. with their annual "Handling Olympics". The 135i came 7th in a field of 13 in the following rank:

1. 911 GT2
2. BMW M3
3. Evo X
4. SLK 55 AMG
5. HSV GTS
6. Renault Clio sport
7. BMW 135i
8. Suby STi Spec R
9. Lotus Elise
10. FPV F6
11. RX-8 GT
12. Ford XR6 Turbo
13. Honda Civic Type R

Test driver Ed Ordynski's comments on the 135i were:

+ "Great engine, runs hard. Extremely linear power delivery, and good, meaty steering feel"

- "Soft on the track. A little too benign to drive. And it wallows a bit too much over irregularities"

Agree with every word from Ed. If you are serious about handling of this car or you do track days, put on a set of decent suspension. No need to go to the extreme like me, something like KW V1 or V2 is perfect.

very nice. thanks for posting. there is just something about the clio - always has been an awesome handler. the new RS5 will give the M3 a fight with its projected torque biasing diff.

and what do i see? the elise comes in below a 1er! LOL!! pommies are not going to dig that very much!

interestingly, he mentions that the 1er is benign to drive. sort of true isn't it? though perhaps turn off the DSC entirely and it becomes rather malignant. and, yes, amen to the wallowing comment. it really has to go...its horrible.

Interesting RX-8 with Bilstein ranked so low. I am sure there is something wrong there. Oh I know, it is Wheels magazine...

GT2 used to be called a "Widow maker", coz it does kill people because of this handling. The 997 GT2 improves a lot, but better than EVO X and Lotus Elise... hmm.

They've whacked a different steering unit into that new SLK55 haven't they?

I've obviously not driven most of those vehicles but i'm surprised by some of the results. I've also not seen the article but i'm assuming they applied some sort of criteria against both road and track conditions? A car such as the Lotus should obviously romp home a track handling but its on-road manners wouldn't rank so highly. Surprised the "widow maker" ranks #1.

Also, is this handling as viewed by an experienced race/rally driver or as a consumer might experience if purchasing such a vehicle?

I will give a direct comparison between a Lotus and the 135i in a few weeks hopefully. What elise was it? If they use the top-of-the-line models such as AMG, M3, HSV etc why didnt they just use a Lotus Exige 240r or 2-11 (which would outhandle most of the cars on the list).

Did they test any Ferraris or other exotics ?

It's actually 5.52, 6.00 secs was for the STi on the next line.

Anyone notice the braking test? Rank 9th with 38.27m compared to what Motor managed of 34.84m during Bank for Buck! How can they differ so much??

Yes I was wondering the same thing as well. Our car blitzed the field with the braking in Motor...... hmmm.

Maybe the car was tested immediately after the track tests and the brakes didn't have time to cool:iono:

Look at the 'tests only' section. I cant read what it says in the faint text above it, but I guess it is designed to remove driver error around the track (some cars easier to drive etc). The 135i is a solid contender...i still find it quite interesting that for such an unassuming vehicle it is so competitive.

Lotus was the new supercharged Elise btw. And its a weapon.

The feint text reads:

"As promised, we collated the results both with and without Ed Ordynski's subjective opinion. The top two and bottom four cars didn't change, but there was lots of movement in the middle"

The Lotus Elise SC had a dodgy seat which meant that Ed didn't give a score for this car. That's why the Lotus ranked 9th because it missed out on points from the driver rating. Assuming it owuld have gotten a score of at least 2.9 out of 5, the Lotus Elise SC would have finished in third place.

Did anyone notice the lateral G rating for the 135i? Only 0.85G which is bloody appalling. It replicates the low scores in some of the corners. Seems like the tyres and suspension could use some changes.
