Ok, at 36k. And I've done two deployments with this car sitting 6 months. BMW trickle charger did great.

Why in the world would you need to code for battery replacement? I removed the ground for JB4 installation, and that should be the same as replacing the battery. I really don't understand this. 95K November 07 build here and appears to be the stock battery.

So that the car(Alternator) knows what size(Amp/hrs, and cold cranking amps) the battery is. There are three sizes of batteries for our cars(I believe).

Fact is the battery does need to be coded for the charging system to work properly. And lets not forget about the pyrotechnic charged positive cable that works along with the airbags in case of a deployment/accident.

Honestly, this just seems like another way for BMW to create a market for themselves. Airbags and alternators worked just fine prior to this, without any need for coding.

08 Vert 30K miles, I operate the top always w/ the car off and yet still running strong.

When I store the car for a month or more I remove the negative side of battery.

I do however need to take it for the recall~!

08 135i CV, 69K miles, daily driver, original battery and pretty much everything else. Added Sirius radio and alarm recently. One engine problem with Vanos solenoids under warranty and did electrical recall. Otherwise ok.

lol you guys are getting ripped off on batteries. I put a durlast in mine. The OEM battery was not AGM it was just standard cost 100 dollars. The AGM one was like 150.00 I think at the time.

Oh but yeah I replaced my OEM 09 battery this year at 76k

I have an 09/08 E88 with 115k kms and an 10/08 E82 with 49k kms both on their original batteries. They haven't given me much problem except the other day when I was fiddling around updating the procede on the E82 and accidentally left all the lights and aircon and radio on for about 30 minutes. The car wouldn't crank and gave me all sorts of random ABS, tyre, engine, TC warning lights. I disconnected the battery for about a minute and then reconnected it and luckily it started up after a mildly long crank.

Does anyone know if you have the Platinum level BMW extended warranty if BMW will replace a dead battery minus the $50 deductible? I have a late '08 build E82 with 32,000 that I only drive on weekends. No problems thus far but just want to be educated if it does happen in the near future.

Factory battery here, 08/80k. Cranks are getting a little weak, though. Time to get an OEM replacement and reset with BT.

I've read this as well but it's not consistent with common practice and if anything a step backward so I'm having a hard time accepting it. People are always installing after market batteries in cars that aren't to the exact spec as OEM with no problems. If that's unique to this BMW I'd like to know why. Not doubting that BMW recommends it I just can't imagine why it's necessary.

Well... BMW has always been pushing the tech leading edge on their cars. BMW is one of the only car companies to use a BST(Battery Safety Terminal) and a IBS(intelligent Battery System) for the charging system. Bellow are some videos for you on this subject...

Thank you. Good explanation of the BST, I've always wondered what it actually did. What about the battery 'coding' or 'registration'? Do you have any information on what it actually is and why it's required? They didn't seem to make use of it in the videos.

Battery coding is really one or two separate steps. If you replace your battery with one of the same size and type, you only need to "register" the battery as new. That is done in Tool32 for modern BMWs. If you change the size or type, you also need to tell the car about that you do that using NCSExpert. You can also reset the vehicle order to change the battery type or size.

The purpose of these software changes is to tell the car what it needs to do to charge the battery properly.

08 / 73K still starts fine and it was 1 degree F this morning. The shifter was a little gummy getting into gear until the car was warmed up tho. I had the manual gearbox fluid replaced less than year ago so.. it was not due to old fluid.
