Squealing sound when braking

I have a squealing sound when braking. When I had it serviced they took the pads, cleaned and the squealing dissapeared. After a couple of week of rain the noise re-appeared...

I think this might be a common issue. Do you have any solution that not involves taking wheels and pads?

Thanks

It's brake dust and a common issue with the stock brake pads. Not much you can do about it except keep your wheels and brakes clean.

I have even read on here aftermarket pads have the same issue so it could actually be the Calipers that are causing the squeal when they get dust on them? :

Does it go away if you change the pressure on the brake pedal?

Mine do the same thing and it drives me crazy. I hate having a nice car and then rolling up to a light like "SSCCREEERERERERERERRRRRR...p."

Yes: light pressure no squealing, medium squealing, hard no squealing...

There's probably no way to get rid of that. You're hitting the resonant frequency of your brakes. Maybe there's some way to dampen it but the easiest to solution is to live with it or not use that amount of pressure.

Honestly, drive the car harder. Performance brakes are happier when you are more aggressive with them.

My thoughts

This can only be done by yourself, a garage cannot afford the time.
Remove front pads, clean the backs with brake cleaner. 10 to 20 minutes later put a thin film of Permatex Disc Brake Quiet (Bav Auto calls this product Noise Free) on the back of the pads and let this dry for as long as possible, 2 hours is minimum, 24 hours is best. Before install, use a toothpick or similar to put a very small touch of proper synthetic brake grease on the wear tabs on the metal parts of the pads (Bav Auto does not do this in video but recommend it in their "Noise Prevention Check List"). Also clean guide bolts with brake cleaner and apply thin film of brake grease. Go to Bav Auto.com, blog and watch their video "changing brake pads and brake rotors".
I occasionally track my car but its also just a daily driver. I never have any brake noise.

Solid advice! Does the material on the back of the pad act as a damper?

Yes, without a doubt. Now, that being said, I've used many cars without using Disc Brake Quiet and had no problems too. And, thinking about what MMT said above, possibly try re-bedding the brakes:
-perform 10 to 12 partial stops from 70mph to 20mph with first 3 under moderate braking, increasing to 75% to 90% of full braking during the series of stops.
-DO NOT come to a full stop during this cycle
-if friction smell becomes excessive, continue but be a little less aggressive
-once done, continue driving at "high" speed to allow brakes to cool.

The above taken from www.coolcarbonperformance.com

I have been experiencing this also. It happens more so when my wife is driving the car. I've found that good hard solid braking does not result in the squeal, while light braking more often than not results in a squeal. I can modulate with pedal pressure. Initially I was thinking it was the type of pad or something, who knows.

I may try a re-bedding of the pads, but will most likely be servicing them (myself) here shortly. Mainly for when the wife drives it. She absolutely loves driving the E82 compared to I could barely even get her to sit in my previous E30.

I agree with this. I brake hard and have never had any squealing.

I don't drag my brakes. If I am stepping on the brake pedal, it is because I mean it. Have never heard any kind of squeal from them.

Same here. That's what engine braking is for. And yes, I engine brake by downshifting with the DCT.

I had my brakes replaced about a year ago now (Zimmerman rotors, Textar pads), and have this issue - no squeal soft braking, massive squeal medium braking, no squeal hard braking. It appears to be the fronts more so than the rears.

I brought the car back to the very reputable shop where I had the brakes done within 3 weeks, and they said the pads were not glazed (good) and everything appeared to be ok. They applied more grease which temporarily resolved the issue but the squeal just returned after a few days. I attempted to bed the pads in a few times after this, but it just seems to be a temp fix.

The problem is that I do a lot of city driving and medium braking is more prevalent...the squealing gets really annoying, and usually pray that I stop beside a city bus so people think that is the culprit. I was considering replacing the pads with StopTech Street Performance but not sure if that will be just a waste of money.

Funny thing is, if I wash the car and blast the brakes with water and take it for a drive, there is much less squeal, that is until the dust builds up...so maybe that's a key factor here.........................

Honestly, the advice above about cleaning the brakes then lubing them up really well is the best here.

I had the same squeal everyone is describing here, applied the bmw brake paste to the rears, the squeal went away for a few weeks, and now is back I think because didn't clean the caliper carrier really well... Living with it for now.

The noisy brakes on my E88 is the only thing that drives my wife crazy about this car.
Since its a convertible it is even more pronounced.

I was hoping that swapping out the pads for something else would help but it would seem that this is not the case and that squeaky brakes are "expected". Alas...

Same problem - drives me up the wall as I do a lot of driving in the city. Everyone looking at me like I'm too cheap to replace my brakes.

I believe this to be some kind of manufacturing defect, and as it's with the braking (i.e., something directly involved with safety of the vehicle), and not all 135i's seem to have it, that's a bit concerning re: BMW's quality and safety system checks.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one! I've only had mine for a few days and noticed it driving around town.

Thought I'd follow up on what mostly cured my brake squeal, 30+ laps at a scca track night at NJMP!

My LR squeals at light braking, goes away med to hard (and so I always try to brake hard, difficult to do from 25mph). I have Stoptech pads (not a fan), factory calipers and rotors. Plenty of Disc Brake Quiet. I have some confidence this would bed-in nicely, but I have nowhere to do that anywhere near where I live and so I live with it.
