Hydrolocked - options?
Car was hydrolocked today. I was driving down a highway when a vehicle next to me hit a large puddle and filled the front with water.
Insurance (Geico) is going to cover it under comprehensive covereage but not sure what their plans are yet. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Can I expect to be getting a new motor or used? Or might they total it?

It does - I am having an adjuster come out to look at it tomorrow. Hoping they can give me a check and let me get the repairs done myself so I can choose the hardware.

I would have a BMW dealer do the repairs. That way they will be sure to order a tested, factory rebuilt engine. Not some "mileage unknown' junk yard engine.

Unfortuantely it's not always the case. It might be different for Audi, but when my S4 needed a new engine, Audi tried to buy a junkyard engine before I raised hell and requested a new long block.

Under similar circumstances? I am probably going to have a very hard time getting geico to do a new long block...

What mods do you have? From your description, it sounds like these cars are easy to hydrolock. Yikes!

^yup, what he asked. I'm assuming all that water got into the engine bay through the grills and then the DCI's sucked it all up? or did you never put an engine under-shield cover under your car after an oil change?

Geico has always been super friendly to me and has only used OEM parts at my request. They even paid me $1k for an aftermarket splitter. I am very pleased with their service.
I would accept an OEM remanufactured engine or New only. |

Highway is trickier due to load if the front end got soaked. Especially is still have the closed box and snorkel. Checked my engine bay numerous times here after flooding and its always dry by the dci. Then again, OP has n55, different filter placement.

Yeah so the car was totally stock other than the jb4 and CP, which really makes zero difference in all this. The intakes are in the top of the grilles and it's a straight shot back to the filter housing and then right on through the rest of the system. AKA, be careful...
Got the car looked at by the adjuster yesterday and the air filter was still soaked, frozen actually. We had pulled the spark plugs and tried to clear it to get it to turn over but even with a breaker bar on the crank, nadda. Current situation is one of two outcomes: 1. Repair is LESS than the value of the car and they handle the process. 2. Repair is MORE than the value of the car and they total it and i'm SOL. Option 2.5 is that I may be able to keep the car even if it's considered totaled and just foot the bills for repair myself once Geico pays the loan off. I've only had it for 5ish months and it took me 6 to find the damn thing so I'm not giving up yet!!!!

Just because it's a hydrolock does not mean there's damage. Could just need to be cleaned and dried out. That's your best case scenario. Worst case scenario is you need a new block and other supporting components. Either way, I don't see that being more than 20k which should be the ballpark of your cars value.

Costs $25 to have blackstone do it. That's a (very) small price for the information you receive. Sorry to hear about your puppy.

She was very small and very cute, but if she didn't like you (and you would be in good company) she would try to bite you. She didn't like a whole lot of random people, and it just kept getting worse. Something must have been wrong with her, and then she just croaked. I couldn't see any point in doing an autopsy, just a waste of money. |

I still don't understand how this is even possible. What about driving through a downpour...that shouldn't be much different. Does that mean I need to pull over when it's raining hard?
