Does this sound like coil pack failure?
128i, 65k miles on original plugs and coil packs.
It's misfiring at low rpm (under 3k) but only under load. high rpm it seems fine, and if I accelerate very gently it's fine also. If I'm in a higher gear at lower rpm, and give it some more gas it'll 'stutter'. I have no check engine light on, and no codes stored at all. I've scanned it many times. Tried swapping the coils around with no difference. Sound like a bad coil pack, or likely something else? Don't have much to go on with no fault codes. |

Similar symptoms to the eccentric shaft sensor going bad that I experienced. Mine eventually threw that code. Have you done a valve cover gasket job recently? If you look at the valve cover towards the front of the car there is a circular gasket for the connector to the sensor. If that is deteriorated or an oily mess the sensor may be the culprit.
It's not a cheap job however as the sensor is $300 ish and you have to open the valve cover; so probably need to know that's the root cause for sure before going after it. |

I'd replace all your spark plugs and coils - if your car is getting up there in mileage(>70K). It could also be carbon buildup. But plugs and coils are the most likely culprit.

It is very simple to test a coil pack. Just pull it off the plug and listen to see if there is any change in the sound or rpm of the engine. If it doesn't change, the coil is bad. You can also buy a simple cheap tool and test it:
Actually, I think your problem is more likely a bad injector or fuel filter. I think the filter is in the tank? There are several simple test to check injectors: Also the test can be performed with an engine stethoscope, a very cheap and useful tool. Finally, I'm not a fan of replacing parts en masse. I like to exactly identify the problem and replace only that part, because parts especially on my vehicles are very expensive. |

First vid is too simplistic. Bad coils can work fine at idle but miss under load. My wife's 330i worked fine for her with 100k+ on the clock, but when I got on it while merging, I had a bad stumble, and the engine started missing. I babied it for a mile or two then it started firing on all six again, although it threw codes for two cyls. I had just done plugs a few months back, so I installed new coils and it's been fine since...

Getting ahead a couple of steps, has anyone ever tried removing and cleaning a faulty injector or used any of the myriad of injector cleaner additives on the market ? Just curious in case this turns out to be more than plugs or coils. **Edit** Changing the plugs fixed it....so I put on the DCI - too bad it's also time for my snows. You can do the one coil and plug, but really should swap all. |
