Sometimes life forces you give up things you love most

It looks like my next posting is probably going to been an 8 year assignment to Australia.... and the 1M can't come with me. Now I have to make the decision of store it or sell it. What would you guys do?

I want to keep it, but those $300 a month storage fees (which will go up over time) are brutal over the term of 8 years. Then there's the insurance and justifying it to the wife.

The museum thing is easier said than done. Plus, it's only a 1M.

I can't. I won't have the proper visa that allows me to import a vehicle.

Leave it with a realitive you can trust and talk with your insurance to see if they have a limited mile plan. I put less than a 1000 miles a year on mine and my insurance fee is very low. It's not good to let a car sit without being started and drove around the block once in awhile so a trusted realitive might be able to help that has a garage. I made the mistake of putting a car in storage for 3 years while I was overseas. It ran like crap and had constant problems when I got back. I should have sold it before I left.

8 years is a long time. I would sell it unless you can find a caretaker who is very close to you. The list of people I would entrust and feel comfortable burdening with that task is very short, probably 2 people who are both blood relatives. 8 years is a very long time...

8 Years is a very long time. Ship it over to you or sell it I would say.

What are the specs on your car and where is it currently? Maybe a forum member would buy it off you.....

Why not sell yours and buy one in Australia? Looks like there are a number to choose from.

Just buy one over here, they're cheaper than most other countries from what I've seen.

8 years sounds like a permanent assignment with only annual trips to your point of origin.

Sell it! I doubt prices will appreciate in 8 years, so you'll be able to buy another one when you return to the States.

Eight years is a long time for something bad to happen. If it were me I'd do the sensible thing and sell the car. Take a lot of pictures, go on a fun road trip or two, take it to the track - create some great memories and then sell the car. You'll keep the memories forever.

Edit: Probably a long shot, but it would be cool if you found the right buyer who would stay in touch with you and possibly let you buy the car back upon your return at the then-current market value, plus a small premium for sentimentality. :)

Sell up and by something economical and boring, it will match well with the boring driving you will experience in Aus : )

Yeah just buy one here. Or wait for M2 CSL. Plenty of us here in Melbourne if you need visiting rights for withdrawal symptoms.

I would be happy to keep your 1M for you and make sure that it gets plenty of exercise! LOL!

In all seriousness I would say sell it and use the money to buy something else you want to drive while in Australia. Then when you come home you can sell that vehicle and look for something else here. With the way cars have evolved over the last 10 years it is no telling what might be available in another 8 years.
